IMPORTANT NOTE:
This is currently a revenue-share/equity-based position as we finalize our initial funding rounds over the coming months. We're assembling a founding team of passionate professionals who believe in the long-term potential of Mawforged.
Role Overview
You will own the visual identity of Mawforged and lead all art disciplines (Concept, Character, Environment, Tech Art, VFX, UI/UX) from vision to in-engine delivery. Partnering with Design and Engineering, you’ll turn style guides into scalable pipelines, keep performance and readability on target, and ship iconic visuals for builds, trailers, and the store page.
🛠️ What you’ll do
• Define and own the art direction (style guides, mood, palette, materials, lighting)
• Lead and mentor Concept, Character, Environment, Tech Art, VFX, UI/UX
• Set the quality bar and run reviews, paintovers, and approvals across disciplines
• Build/articulate pipelines for concept → 3D → integration → polish (UE5)
• Partner with Design/Code for readability, performance, and gameplay clarity
• Plan headcount, scope outsourcing, write briefs, and manage deliverables/assets
• Drive milestone visuals: key art, trailers/teasers, store visuals, marketing beats
🎯 You should have
• Senior/lead experience shipping or steering art on a game (indie/AA/AAA)
• Portfolio showing cohesive direction in dark or high-fantasy aesthetics
• Fluency with Blender/Maya, ZBrush, Substance (Painter/Designer), Photoshop, UE5
• Strong grasp of composition, lighting, materials/shaders, and perf vs. fidelity tradeoffs
• Leadership: clear feedback, documentation, and cross-team communication
🚀 Bonus points
• Procedural/Houdini workflows; master materials; Lumen/Nanite savvy
• Trailer/cinematics eye (Sequencer), keysplash/marketing art experience
• Outsourcing/vendor management and budgeting experience
