The Opportunity

Ready to take your networking expertise to the next level? We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior IT Network Engineer to join our dynamic team in Melbourne or Perth. In this role, you’ll be at the heart of Vocus’ technology operations—designing, implementing, and maintaining our internal corporate network and private Cloud data communication services.

Your work will directly ensure maximum availability, security, and performance for both internal teams and external customers. You’ll collaborate with passionate professionals, tackle complex challenges, and play a key role in shaping the future of our network infrastructure.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, love solving problems, and want to make a real impact in a company that values innovation and growth, this is your chance.

What You’ll Be Doing Day-to-day

  • Design and deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance network solutions across Vocus’ private and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation—network designs, configuration standards, diagrams, and operational runbooks.
  • Lead advanced troubleshooting (Level 3 support) for complex networking and cloud connectivity issues, ensuring rapid resolution.
  • Assess and evaluate vendor products and solutions, contributing to technical reviews, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new systems.
  • Drive automation through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices for consistent, repeatable network deployments and configuration management.
  • Configure, monitor, and optimise physical and virtual network devices, cloud interconnects, and overlay technologies for reliability and compliance.
  • Analyse network performance using telemetry and traffic data, applying tuning and remediation to enhance service quality.
  • Ensure smooth handovers by providing comprehensive documentation, operational notes, and technical support during transitions.
  • Champion best practices in change, incident, and problem management to minimise service disruptions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Cloud, Security, and DevOps teams to integrate network services into broader architectures.
  • Innovate and improve by driving standardisation, automation, and adoption of emerging network and cloud technologies.
  • Support business objectives through additional Cloud and Network Engineering tasks as required.

What You’ll Bring To This Role

  • Extensive experience and specialist skills in the configuration, automation, and maintenance of IP networking and cloud communications infrastructure, with the ability to support a wide range of enterprise and service provider technologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of networking standards, frameworks, and compliance requirements, including relevant industry and government regulations for data communications and security.
  • Strong understanding of emerging and cloud-native networking technologies, including software-defined networking (SDN), cloud interconnects, and network automation frameworks, with an ability to assess their commercial and operational impact.
  • Advanced design and operational knowledge of complex LAN, WAN, and hybrid cloud network architectures, including routing, switching, segmentation, and security integration.
  • Proficiency in standardized networking constructs and protocols, including BGP, OSPF, MPLS (L3VPN), VRFs, VXLAN/EVPN, STP, QoS, and FHRPs, as well as advanced traffic engineering and policy-based routing.
  • Expertise in Cisco networking platforms and operating systems (IOS-XR, NX-OS, IOS-XE, Catalyst, ASR, ISR) with practical experience across data center, WAN, and enterprise edge environments.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware NSX-T for micro-segmentation, overlay networking, and cloud integration within virtualized and hybrid environments.
  • Operational experience with next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) — such as Fortinet FortiGate and Palo Alto Networks — including policy management, VPNs, and advanced security services.
  • Strong understanding of load balancing and application delivery technologies, preferably F5 BIG-IP or equivalent, including LTM/GTM and SSL offload configurations.
  • Practical experience with public cloud networking constructs, including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (VPC, Transit Gateway, ExpressRoute, Direct Connect, VPNs, and firewalls).
  • Experience with network automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or Python, and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for network configuration management.
  • Familiarity with network visibility and observability platforms, including telemetry, NetFlow, SNMP, and API-based monitoring integrations.
  • Intermediate project management and coordination skills, with the ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver complex network solutions within defined timelines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document designs clearly and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and troubleshooting capabilities for complex network and cloud infrastructure issues.
  • Previous experience within Service Provider or Cloud environments with an understanding of large-scale multi-tenant architectures and operational processes.
  • 5–7 years of commercial experience in IT/Network Engineering, preferably within Telecommunications or Cloud Infrastructure, supported by tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related discipline.
  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Network Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
