The Role

The Data Engineer will operate as part of the analytics team and will play a critical role in ensuring the availability, reliability, and scalability of our data infrastructure. You will design, build, and maintain the data pipelines, models, and integrations that deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality data across the organisation. This includes maintaining and modernising systems, implementing rigorous documentation and deployment lifecycle practices.

Operating in a fast-paced news media environment, you will work closely with analytics, editorial, product, and commercial teams to support data-informed decision-making. You will also collaborate with third-party vendors and external partners to integrate external data sources - particularly via AWS S3 - into our Snowflake environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain robust ETL/ELT workflows, including developing stored procedures, implementing orchestration best practices, and ensuring reliability, scalability, and observability across data pipelines.

  • Work with a wide range of external data sources, where strong familiarity with AWS S3 and related integration patterns is highly beneficial for configuring secure, reliable ingestion into Snowflake.

  • Partner with data analysts and data scientists to develop well-structured datasets and semantic layers for reporting, experimentation and advanced analytics.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to understand data requirements and develop solutions.

  • Maintain rigorous processes of documentation and deployment lifecycle procedures.

  • Monitor data flow and quality to ensure accuracy and consistency. Share knowledge and provide mentorship to other team members.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+years experience working as a Data Engineer.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, including complex queries, and performance optimisation.
  • Hands-on experience with data warehousing technologies, specifically Snowflake, and a solid understanding of warehouse design and data modelling principles.
  • Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines using orchestration tools (e.g. ADF, Airflow) and familiarity with data quality and observability practices.
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms, with experience integrating external data sources via AWS S3.
  • Proficiency in Python for automation, data processing, and interacting with APIs.
  • Strong understanding of data security, governance and access control, preferably with experience in enterprise environments.
  • Experience collaborating with analytics and data science teams, with the ability to translate requirements into scalable data solutions.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control (Git), and documentation standards.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and influence decisions.
  • A growth mindset, with a willingness to learn, share knowledge and take on expanded responsibilities over time.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Power BI or equivalent, knowledge of BigQuery and Google Cloud Platform

Personal Specifications:

  • High attention to detail and commitment to data quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborative working style and ability to build relationships across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Proactive approach to identifying process improvements and optimising data workflows.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
