Your future duties and responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced Network Engineer to support a major Defence communications program based in Adelaide. This role involves delivering secure, high-performance network infrastructure to enable resilient communications across Defence operational environments.

You will work within a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for the design, implementation, integration, and sustainment of complex network environments aligned with Defence ICT and security standards.

  • Design & Implementation:
  • Develop and document network architectures and topologies for Defence systems, including IP-based transport, routing, and security overlays.
  • Configure and deploy routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs in classified network environments.
  • Integrate network components with satellite communications and terrestrial systems.
  • Network Operations & Maintenance:
  • Monitor network performance and implement optimisations to ensure reliability and availability.
  • Conduct fault diagnosis, incident response, and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain network configuration control and documentation in accordance with Defence ICT standards.
  • Security & Compliance:
  • Implement network hardening and security controls consistent with ISM and ADF cyber policy.
  • Participate in security accreditation, risk assessments, and vulnerability management activities.
  • Collaboration & Support:
  • Work closely with Defence stakeholders, CIOG representatives, and system integrators.
  • Provide technical input to design reviews, system integration testing, and operational readiness activities.

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a Network Engineer in secure or Defence ICT environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Layer 2/3 networking, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP), and QoS.
  • Experience with Cisco or Juniper network equipment (CCNP or equivalent desirable).
  • Proficiency in firewall technologies, IPSec, and VPN configurations.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring and management tools (SolarWinds, SNMP, NetFlow).
  • Understanding of Defence ICT security frameworks (ISM, DSGL, DISP).
  • Excellent documentation and configuration management discipline.

Desirable:

  • Exposure to satellite or tactical communications systems.
  • Experience with automation and scripting (Python, Ansible).
  • Knowledge of SD-WAN or network virtualisation technologies.
  • Experience working in multi-domain or air-gapped network environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Network Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Current NV1 or higher security clearance.
  • Relevant vendor certifications (e.g. Cisco CCNP, Juniper JNCIS, Fortinet NSE).
