The Linux Systems Group, part of Microsoft’s Azure Core Compute group, plays a key role in powering Azure Cloud through Linux operating systems and virtualization technologies.
We are seeking a Software Engineer with strong programming skills to collaborate with senior engineers in developing, debugging, and maintaining virtualization software for the Linux platform. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to Microsoft’s Azure Cloud infrastructure growth.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain Linux features for Guest VMs running on the Azure infrastructure.
- Enhance and support Linux Hyper-V drivers to ensure performance, stability, and reliability.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of ARM64-based Azure offerings for Guest VMs.
- Enhancements and maintenance for Confidential Computing Guest VM offerings on Azure.
- Collaborate closely with the Linux kernel upstream community to upstream new features and improvements.
- Represent the team and Microsoft in international open-source conferences and forums, contributing to technical discussions and community initiatives.
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
- Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
- With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
- Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
- Reviews current developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ years of experience with programming skills in C/C++ and concepts in virtualization technologies like KVM, Hyper-V, XEN, Qemu, Cloud Hypervisor
- 1+ years of experience with Linux internals, including process management, file systems, networking and their relation to virtualization concepts.
- 1+ years of experience with kernel-space vs. user-space concepts
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
- OR related technical field AND 1+ year(s) technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript,
- OR Python
- OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ years of experience with Git and standard development workflows
- 1+ years of experience with Linux kernel development, device drivers, or embedded systems.
