In 2018, Bitvavo launched the first version of its digital assets trading platform, to bridge the gap between traditional currencies and digital assets. By offering transparent fees, a wide range of assets and an easy to use platform, Bitvavo is making the currency of the future accessible for everyone.

In two years' time, Bitvavo has established itself as the market leader in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe, with over one million users exchanging tens of billions of digital assets a year.

Our team, located in Amsterdam, is looking for self-driven, talented people who can help make digital assets available for everyone.

About The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Security Engineer to take a leading role within Bitvavo’s Security Detection and Response (SDR) function. You’ll shape how we detect, investigate, and respond to threats, design smarter defences across our infrastructure, and elevate the team’s technical depth and operational maturity.

This is a hands-on engineering role with strategic impact — ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of detection engineering, automation, and incident response.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Detection Engineering: Architect, deploy, and continuously refine detection logic and analytics to surface threats across Bitvavo’s environment in real time.
  • Incident Leadership: Take charge of complex investigations — from triage and containment through to remediation and post-incident reviews.
  • Data Protection: Build and maintain policies, tools, and monitoring that safeguard sensitive data against misuse or exfiltration.
  • Network & Web Defence: Enhance controls and visibility across network and web layers to strengthen overall resilience.
  • Security Operations Enablement: Lead the optimisation of SDR tools, integrations, and configurations to drive efficiency and scalability.
  • Automation & Integration: Leverage scripting (Python, PowerShell, or similar) to automate response actions and improve workflow consistency.
  • Governance & Reporting: Align controls with internal and external compliance standards, and deliver clear reporting on threat trends and control performance.

What We Look For

  • 8+ years of experience in security engineering, detection & response, or threat operations.
  • Deep knowledge of network, endpoint, and cloud security principles.
  • Hands-on experience building or tuning detection rules, managing incidents, and implementing data security solutions.
  • Familiarity with automation or scripting for operational improvement (Python, PowerShell preferred).
  • Strong analytical mindset with an eye for continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to mentor peers and elevate team technical standards.
  • Certifications such as GCIA, GCIH, or CISSP are a plus.
