At UpCloud, you’ll be literally building the cloud.
Sometimes, cloud technologies can be offered as a patchwork of ready-made solutions. At UpCloud, however, you'll be working with something that we've built from the ground up! Our existing infrastructure relies on commodity server hardware running open-source Linux-based systems and in-house automation developed and maintained by our own developers.
We’re on a mission to be the number #1 European cloud platform, built on performance, reliability, and trust. While data sovereignty has become a hot topic in the EU, we can proudly say that we’ve been mastering it since 2011. UpCloud’s business and infrastructure are growing, and we’re currently opening two new data centres in the Nordics, in addition to our 13 existing ones worldwide.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that in a positive growth path, as we are on, we also need new hands on deck! We are looking for a System Engineer to join our skilled Infrastructure operations team that knows how to deliver excellence, yet fosters an atmosphere where jokes fly just as much as completed tickets!
This role requires frequent visits to our Finnish data centres located in Helsinki, and thus we can consider only applicants living in the Helsinki capital region.
Our ideal match would be either a mid-level or senior-level System Engineer with a technologically curious mind who strives to always keep learning new things. The work at data centers can be quite physical, so you should be able to lift around 10-15kg and be okay with working in 30 °C temperatures from time to time.
Your responsibilities:
- Maintain and develop our production virtualisation and storage infrastructure (hardware and software)
- Handle daily operational tasks (change management, incident management) together with the rest of the operations team and our partners, keeping our infrastructure running 24/7
- Travel to UpCloud’s data centres in Europe and in the USA to do routine hardware installation and maintenance tasks (up to 25% of the time)
- Help our customer support and the rest of the company by handling technical questions
Requirements:
- Proven track record of Linux server administration skills (bare-metal and virtualised)
- Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to comprehend complex environments
- Basic understanding of container systems (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Database knowledge (MySQL/Postgresql), experience in managing HA systems preferred
- Good understanding and hands-on experience of the basics of the Internet and relevant server-side applications (DNS, HTTPD etc.)
- Understanding of network technologies (TCP/IP, LB's etc.) and storage systems (ZFS, iSCSI)
- Knowledge of server/networking hardware and data centers, and their monitoring
- Security-oriented mindset
- Good documentation skills
