About the role
Position: Senior Research Scientist
Location: Sydney, Melbourne, Kolkata
Overview:
We are seeking an exceptionally talented and motivated Senior Research Scientist to join our advanced research division. The successful candidate will drive innovation in core areas of computer science, translating fundamental research into tangible, high-impact prototypes and publications. The Senior Research Scientist will set the technical direction for long-term research initiatives and mentor junior researchers and engineers.
This role requires deep expertise, a proven track record of significant contributions to the field, and the ability to lead complex projects independently. In this role, you will lead advanced research initiatives, develop novel algorithms and systems, publish high-impact work, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate research outcomes into real-world innovations. The ideal candidate is an independent thinker with a strong track record of scientific contributions and the ability to mentor junior researchers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fundamental Research: Design, execute, and lead cutting-edge research in a designated area of computer science (e.g., Machine Learning, Distributed Systems, Formal Methods, Computer Vision, or Robotics).
- Publication & Dissemination: Publish novel research findings in top-tier conferences (e.g., STOC, FOCS, ICML, NeurIPS, ICCV, CVPR) and reputable peer-reviewed journals. Represent the organization at academic and industry events.
- Strategic Direction: Define and champion the research roadmap for core technical challenges, identifying opportunities for breakthrough innovations that align with the company's long-term vision.
- Prototyping & Technology Transfer: Develop high-quality, reproducible code and proofs-of-concept to validate research hypotheses. Collaborate with engineering teams to facilitate the transfer of successful prototypes into production environments.
- Mentorship and Team Leadership: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback to Ph.D. interns, junior researchers, and research engineers. May manage a small team of researchers.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, software engineers, and other research groups, to understand real-world constraints and opportunities for research application.
- IP Generation: Contribute significantly to the company’s intellectual property portfolio through the filing of patents and trade secrets.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral or industry research experience with a demonstrated trajectory of increasing responsibility and technical leadership.
- Publication Record: A distinguished record of first-author or senior-author publications at highly selective, top-tier venues relevant to the area of specialization.
- Technical Depth: Exceptional proficiency in modern programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Julia) and relevant research frameworks/tools (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Hadoop, LaTeX).
- Problem-Solving: Proven ability to define ambiguous problems, formulate rigorous research questions, and design experiments to test hypotheses.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a major research initiative from ideation through publication and technology transfer.
- Active participation and leadership within the academic community (e.g., serving on program committees, reviewing papers).
- Demonstrated experience in securing research grants or external funding (if applicable to the organizational structure).
- Expertise in one or more of the following specialized areas:
- Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI
- Causal Inference and Machine Learning for Science
- Quantum Computing Algorithms
- Explainable AI (XAI) and Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAT) in ML
- Highly Scalable Distributed Systems and Cloud Architecture
