Intern Software Engineering, Data Platforms
full time, starting in March-April-May 2026, 6 months, student status required
About The Team And The Role
Cloud Data Technologies (CDT) builds and manages the data infrastructure that powers the full lifecycle of eBay’s data—from onsite systems through analytics. The team focuses on scalable, reliable distributed systems used across the company. As an Intern, Software Engineer (Data Platforms), you’ll help design and deliver services that advance eBay’s Core Data Platform, improving scalability, reliability, and the overall developer experience. This role sits within Data Platform Engineering, focused on building the platform rather than application-level data pipelines.
What you will accomplish
- Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate distributed services and features that strengthen eBay’s Core Data Platform.
- Build and enhance platform capabilities across ingestion, streaming, lakehouse/warehouse, catalog, and data governance.
- Write production-grade code with strong observability practices, including metrics, logs, traces, and well-defined SLOs.
- Diagnose and resolve performance, scalability, and correctness issues within distributed environments.
- Contribute technical design documents and engage in reviews to support reliability, security, and cost efficiency.
- Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and analytics teams to align platform work with business outcomes and expand your experience with high-scale distributed systems.
- Interest in developing as a professional software engineer, with strong fundamentals in distributed systems (consensus, replication, partitioning, consistency models, fault tolerance).
- Practical experience building and operating distributed systems in production, plus strong coding skills in Java or Python and familiarity with CI/CD.
- Hands-on experience with one or more of the following: Kafka/Flink, Spark, Delta/Iceberg, Kubernetes, or NoSQL/columnar data stores.
- Solid debugging, performance analysis, and system design capabilities.
- (Optional) Experience with multi-tenant platform services, data governance, or privacy-by-design controls
