We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer (PHP) to join our high-performing engineering team. You will play a key role in designing, building, and optimising backend systems that support high-traffic products, content platforms, and marketplace operations.

This role requires strong hands-on development experience, architectural thinking, and the ability to mentor other developers while collaborating with Product, Content, and Marketplace teams.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver backend features as part of sprint work, writing clean, performant, and maintainable code.
• Architect reliable, scalable, secure, and cost-efficient backend solutions.
• Improve system Performance, Cost, Quality, and Security by proactively identifying enhancement opportunities.
• Mentor junior and offshore developers on architecture, best practices, code quality, and performance.
• Work with Tech Directors and Engineering Managers to refine processes, governance, and delivery frameworks.
• Ensure adherence to coding standards, documentation practices, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Estimate, propose solutions, and run Proof of Concepts (POCs) for complex or high-risk technical items.
• Collaborate closely with Product Managers/Owners on technical feasibility, solution design, and impact analysis.
• Work with external technology vendors on integrations, platform capabilities, and infrastructure.
• Partner with Marketplace and Content teams to support business operations, customer service, and content delivery.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 6+ years of full-stack development experience, with strong expertise in PHP, Laravel, and WordPress.
• Proven experience building REST/GraphQL APIs and standalone backend applications (Laravel, Horizon).
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL databases; proficient with ORMs such as Eloquent.
• Experience with cloud environments such as AWS or GCP.
• Practical understanding of DevOps principles: Automation, CI/CD, Observability, Monitoring, and Logging.
• Experience building and supporting high-traffic, secure, scalable, and cost-optimised systems (AWS Well-Architected Framework is a plus).
• Solid understanding of Cloud Infrastructure, Microservices, Distributed Systems, and ETL processes.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies — sprint planning, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
• Strong communication skills with experience coaching and mentoring developers.
