On behalf of the European Space Agency, we are looking for a highly skilled Future Engineer to work in ESTEC, in the Netherlands.
What Is Expected From You
Production Engineering
- Identify cost drivers, critical processes, and improvement measures in themanufacturing, assembly, integration, test and logistics of European SpaceSystems generating detailed value stream maps highlighting critical processesand components.
- Track systems production progress, industrial capacities and capabilities, andstatus of projects.
- Monitor resource conflicts, signal deviations and propose solutions to keep planson track.
- Review schedules, process flows, etc. to understand methods and activities inoperations, integration and services, and solutions to improve efficiency andeliminate waste.
- Provide inputs to production engineering requirements for inclusion in industrialcontracts.
- Analyse critical paths, identify critical areas and produce accurate and conciseanalyses and recommendations.
- Propose relevant supply chain optimizations to increase agility andcompetitiveness.
- Develop and maintain complex system and sub-system planning and schedules.Maintain the master document lists, Configuration Item Data List, AsBuilt Configuration List (ABCL) evolution, bilateral documents, engineering plans, requirements baseline, and other governing documents, ensuring that the content is consistent and accurately reflects the design baseline evolution, and coordinating review and approval processes.
- Monitor the sustainability of the systems supply chain by identifying and implementing relevant measures to reduce CO2 footprint by 40% - e.g. by reducing internal and external logistic effort and transport, reducing reworks, replacing environmental unfriendly & hazardous processes, supporting the usage of renewable or low-impact extraction methods, and reducing energy consumption – in cooperation with the ESA Clean space office.
- Collect, assess and sum up information on trends related to technical infrastructure and sustainability.
- Support in creating processes / methods to gather supplier contract and process activity data, designing control systems to minimise and resolve process and project issues.
- Provide support to management of ESA provided equipment, (e.g. equipment being operated in or on international partner modules).
- Support the project team in Technical Reviews with Industrial Consortia or International Partners (e.g. PDR, CDR, QAR, Manufacturing / Integration / Test Readiness reviews, Post-Test reviews, Pre-Shipment reviews, Delivery Review Boards), by reviewing the associated data packs for completeness, coherency and for proper change and waiver implementation.
- Provide review of technical industrial proposals, support project teams and technical meetings with industry or International Partners
- Plan and support audits / physical inspections regarding engineering and PA&S
- Support project teams in implementation of harmonized engineering practices throughout the Agency and its projects.
- Monitor engineering processes to be specific, accurate and controlled, yet agile and adaptable to allow rapid implementation of process improvements.
- Support project teams to identify and introduce automated methods and tools to streamline and improve team collaboration and configuration and data management tasks.
- provide updates to documentation of related processes and procedures
- Support the Centre of Competence for Manufacturing and Serial Production, by providing technical inputs and contributing to activities related to industrialisation and serial production matters.
- Contribute to interactions with industry, supporting ESA’s engagement with industrial stakeholders on topics of industrialisation and serialisation.
- Support coordination activities with ESA programmes and directorates, contributing to the alignment and harmonisation of industrialisation-related initiatives across the Agency.
- Provide inputs to cross-domain collaboration, facilitating exchanges between ESA core competences (e.g. standardisation, modelling and simulation, artificial intelligence, industrial policy and smart manufacturing) and external partners.
- Support the identification and assessment of advanced production practices and technologies, contributing to the scouting of methodologies, hardware, software and automation solutions relevant to space manufacturing.
- Support the assessment and adoption of advanced production techniques, including automation, quality control and modular manufacturing approaches for space and ground systems.
- Contribute to collaborative activities with European manufacturers and production experts, supporting efforts to optimise supply chains, improve manufacturing efficiency, and reduce costs.
- Provide technical inputs to training activities and digital maturity assessments, supporting the definition of benchmarks and best practices for industrialisation within the space sector.
- Contribute to the definition and preparation of demonstration facilities, such as model factories or testbeds, aimed at validating advanced manufacturing technologies.
- Support the development of digital frameworks, including concepts such as product passports for improved traceability, circularity, and supply chain resilience.
- Contribute to the evolution of ESA’s industrialisation strategy and related standards, including inputs to ECSS standards (e.g. ECSS-I) and policy discussions.
- Support the relationship-building activities, providing inputs to ESA’s engagement with industry, Member States, and partner agencies to foster a robust and innovative industrial ecosystem.
- Contribute to the creation and strengthening of industrial capabilities, supporting initiatives for the development of scalable production capabilities for space products and applications.
- Provide inputs to scaling-up initiatives, including demand forecasting, capability mapping, and assessments of industrial capacities and facilities.
- Support design studies and trade-off analyses, contributing industrialisation expertise to promote modular, standardised, and scalable approaches.
- Provide inputs to ESA’s tendering and procurement activities, supporting the assessment of industry’s capacity to deliver systems and equipment at scale.
- Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in in Physics, Engineering or Computer Science is required.
- Experience in planning, scheduling, configuration/data management and process monitoring, with ability to introduce automation and digital tools.
- Experience in manufacturing, assembly, integration, test, logistics, and supply chain optimisation, including value stream mapping and sustainability measures.
- Knowledge of industrialisation and serial production methods and advanced production technologies.

You will be working within ESTEC, the European Space Agency’s offices in the Netherlands as a contractor for Telespazio Belgium. We don’t expect the employees to be on-site full time however you will still have to relocate to the Netherlands for this position.
