Full-timeRemote FriendlyEngineering, Information Technology

In a nutshell

  • $5,000 - $6,500 base compensation per month + CPF.
  • $650 per month in equity (at current valuation), vesting monthly over 4 years after a 1 year cliff.
  • 24 days of annual leave.
  • Fully remote.

Our tech stack

To manage our tools, we use mise. Our monorepo is written in Python using Litestar and HTMX (with JS for client-side interactivity), stored on GitHub (with GHA for CI/CD), and deployed on GCP. Our data is stored in Supabase and our infrastructure is managed with OpenTofu (open-source Terraform fork). Observability data is produced with OpenTelemetry and visualised with HyperDX. Work is tracked with Linear.

What we're looking for

  • A deep understanding of Python, HTML, and CSS.
  • An appreciation of automation, especially automated testing.
  • A keen ability to understand the business case and prioritise ruthlessly.
  • A burning passion for constantly improving tooling and engineering processes.
  • Independence and creativity in problem-solving.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.

What would be great to see

  • Experience in a similar position at an early-stage startup.
  • An intuition for user-friendly and accessible designs.
  • Meaningful open-source contributions, or any other publicly verifiable work.
  • An understanding of the public relations industry and lifecycle.

Why you should join us

  • No micromanagement. Results count more than presenteeism or workplace theatre.
  • Remote-first, forever. Work from wherever you want, subject to tax/regulatory requirements.
  • Perceptible impact. You build it, you ship it, customers use it.
  • Imagine if we really pop off... 🤑

Things you need to know

  • Your responsibilities will be broad. This is not a job where requirements are given to you fully-formed, and all you have to do is write code and hand it off to QA/Ops.
  • We could fail. Our revenue is decent, but we are not profitable yet, and the way is dark and full of errors.
  • We know the cash comp is on the lower side; we’ve crunched the numbers and this is our best offer. We intend the equity grant to compensate (heh) for some of that, and we commit to salary reviews as our revenue grows.
  • We don’t have medical insurance yet. We do have a $400 annual medical expense allowance, and we will definitely improve coverage as we become more financially stable.
  • It won’t be easy. We’re not asking you to work weekends or think endlessly about work, but you will need to learn quickly, be creative, and be comfortable with changing requirements. There’s a lot of ambiguity in our problem space and processes that you will need to deal with.

The interview process

We know that interviews are uncomfortable and inconvenient for everyone, and we want to make sure the signal-noise ratio is worth it. In line with this, we do our best to make sure that we use our time together as efficiently as possible.

Introductory chat - 30 minutes

We sell you on the Alpha Story story, learn a little about your career trajectory and motivations, and agree on expectations.

Coding/code review - asynchronous

You’ll be given access to a repository, where you’re required to do two things:

  1. Take a requirement and create a pull request to meet it.
  2. Provide feedback and suggested changes on an existing pull request.

Situational/product collaboration - 90 minutes

Talk about your work in the previous round, then discuss something you built and the tradeoffs you made.

Non-technical - 30 minutes

Speak with the CEO and COO to get a sense of where the company’s going.
