Junior Trading / Site Reliability Engineer – HFT ETF Market Making

We’re looking for a junior engineer to join our high-performance HFT ETF Market Making team. Nine Mile is Australia’s largest ETF market maker, and we’ve recently expanded into Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, with many more markets on the horizon. This is a great opportunity for someone who has recently graduated or has 1–2 years of experience and wants to break into the fast-paced world of high-frequency trading.

At Nine Mile, technology drives everything we do. You’ll work with a talented group of engineers and traders solving complex problems in a supportive, collaborative environment.

The Role:

As a Nine Mile Site Reliability Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work at the front line of our trading systems. Responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Support and maintain high-performance Linux systems, including basic tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Assist with automation and configuration tasks using tools like Ansible, Puppet, and scripting.
  • Write simple tools and scripts in Python and Bash to improve workflows and system reliability.
  • Help optimise low-latency trading infrastructure, including CPU/NUMA settings and specialised network hardware.
  • Work with senior engineers on network configuration, firewalls, routing, and switch management.
  • Monitor system performance and alerts using Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, and similar tools.
  • Support storage and virtualisation platforms such as CEPH, Synology NAS, VMware, KVM, or Proxmox.
  • Assist with cloud environments (AWS/GCP) and Infrastructure-as-Code workflows using Terraform.
  • Contribute to backup, recovery, and business continuity processes for critical trading systems.

What You Will Bring

  • A strong foundation in Linux and comfort working across different operating systems.
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (preferably Python or Bash).
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, routing, firewalls).
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • A genuine interest in financial markets, trading systems, or low-latency technology.
  • A strong academic background in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related degree.
  • (Optional but beneficial) Exposure to high-performance or real-time systems, either through internships, personal projects, or a course.
