About the Role

The Government of Alberta’s Digital Design and Delivery Division (DDD) is seeking up to three DevOps Specialists to support major digital transformation initiatives across ministries. DDD partners with GoA product owners and cross-functional teams to redesign services, modernize operations, and deliver efficient, citizen-focused digital solutions.

In this role, the DevOps Specialist will work across multiple product teams to design, automate, and operate secure, scalable DevOps environments. You will help streamline deployments, improve application observability, support CI/CD best practices, and enable continuous delivery of custom-built solutions.

This is a strategic, hands-on role requiring strong technical capabilities, collaboration, and the ability to work within fast-paced agile delivery teams.


Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop automation scripts, tools, and procedures to support low-downtime deployment and maintenance.

• Lead operational management of digital services in production, including configuration, credential management, maintenance planning, and DB upgrades/backups/recovery.

• Build and optimize CI/CD pipelines and reusable deployment templates.

• Automate environment creation for development, testing, and integration phases.

• Build monitoring, observability, and telemetry tools to support application performance and stability.

• Support integration testing, security scanning, performance/load testing, and user-facing beta/alpha deployments.

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in discovery, backlog refinement, sprint execution, and field research.

• Work across 2–3 concurrent projects and deliver iterative enhancements aligning with user needs and GoA digital standards.

• Provide mentorship and operational guidance in agile and DevOps best practices.


Mandatory Skills & Qualifications


Education/Experience Requirements

A DevOps Specialist must meet one of the following combinations (per GoA standards):

• University Degree + 4 years relevant experience

• 2-year Diploma + 6 years relevant experience

• 1-year Certificate + 7 years relevant experience

• IT Professional Certification + 8 years relevant experience


Technical Requirements (Minimum Experience Levels)

• Research, analysis, and problem-solving – 3 years

• Documenting issues, solutions, and procedures – 3 years

• Experience with SSH, remote access tools, and RDP – 3 years

• Security awareness (secrets management, least privilege) – 3 years

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) for scalable data solutions – 3 years

• Command line and filesystem operations – 4 years

• Knowledge of networking tools (DNS, traceroute, load balancing) – 1 year

• Experience with scripting (PowerShell) – 4 years


Nice to Have

• DevOps experience supporting continuous delivery of custom-built solutions – 2 years

• Designing/deploying hybrid cloud applications in Red Hat OpenShift – 2 years

• Disaster recovery testing – 2 years

• Experience with IaC (Terraform) – 2 years

• Experience with Visual Studio 2012+ – 3 years

• Enterprise-scale CI/CD pipeline experience – 3 years


Other Mandatory Requirements

Each candidate must provide two DevOps project examples, addressing:

  1. Overview of the project and the candidate’s DevOps responsibilities.
  2. Sector served (public/private), user base, and team size.
  3. Tools, technologies, and methodologies used.
  4. Demonstrated experience supporting continuous delivery of custom-built solutions.
  5. Years of experience with:
  6. • Hybrid cloud or OpenShift deployments
  7. • GitHub Actions
  8. • Terraform or IaC tools
  9. • CI/CD pipeline creation & maintenance
