Backend Developer - Fully Remote - £70K + Benefits
We’re a small but fast-moving tech start-up on a mission to build something genuinely game-changing. We’re still early in our journey, small team, big ideas and we’re looking for someone who wants to help shape a product, not just code one.
If you’re excited by the idea of joining a start-up where your voice matters, where your work directly impacts the roadmap, and where you’ll grow alongside the company, we should definitely talk.
The Role
We’re hiring a Backend Developer who’s passionate about building scalable, reliable backend systems in a modern stack. You’ll be one of the first engineering hires, which means you’ll play a key role in shaping our architecture, development practices, and engineering culture.
This is a fully remote role, but the team meets virtually throughout the week and gets together in person every so often for planning, collaboration, and the occasional social.
What You’ll Be Working On
- Designing and building our backend services and APIs
- Collaborating with the founding team to develop new features end-to-end
- Improving system performance, reliability, and observability as we scale
- Integrating external services and expanding our platform capabilities
- Helping define the engineering standards and best practices for the whole company
- Spotting problems early and proposing creative, pragmatic solutions
Since we’re a -, you’ll have plenty of ownership and plenty of freedom.
Our Tech Stack
We keep it modern and lightweight. Experience with any of the following is a big plus:
- Node.js / TypeScript (our core backend choice)
- PostgreSQL and Redis
- REST or GraphQL APIs
- AWS (Lambda, ECS, RDS) or similar cloud platforms
- Docker, GitHub Actions, and automated testing
That said, we care more about your problem-solving skills and engineering mindset than the exact languages you’ve used.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong backend development experience (Node.js or similar)
- A solid understanding of APIs, distributed systems, and database design
- Good instincts around performance, security, and scalability
- Someone comfortable in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
- A proactive mindset you see gaps and love filling them
- A collaborator who’s happy working remotely but communicates clearly
If you’ve worked at a start-up before, great. If not, but you’ve always wanted to, that’s great too.
Nice to Have
- Experience with serverless, event-driven systems, or microservices
- Interest in DevOps/infra or willingness to learn
- Previous experience as an early-stage hire
- A product mindset—you care about the “why,” not just the “how”
Why You’ll Love Working With Us
- Early-stage impact — help shape the product, the tech, and the culture
- Fully remote within the UK — flexible hours, async-friendly team
- Meaningful equity — be part of our long-term success
- Genuine autonomy — no micromanagement, lots of ownership
- Fast career progression — grow as we grow
- Smart, friendly teammates who care about building something great
We’re building something ambitious and we want people who are excited by that challenge.
If this sounds like you, get in touch.
