Network Engineer – 3-Month Contract (Likely extension)

Our client, a well-established organisation with a complex corporate and manufacturing technology environment, is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to join their IT team on an initial 3-month contract. You’ll play a key role in supporting and maintaining their enterprise network and voice infrastructure, with strong potential for contract extension.

This role suits someone who thrives in hands-on operational work, enjoys troubleshooting, and is confident supporting multi-site environments.


Key Responsibilities


Network Operations & Support

  • Monitor network performance and respond to alerts, outages, and service degradation.
  • Diagnose and resolve Level 2–3 issues across LAN, WAN, wireless, internet, and VPN environments.
  • Complete routine configuration changes on switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless controllers.
  • Assist in troubleshooting carrier/provider issues and escalate appropriately.
  • Maintain network documentation, diagrams, and configuration records.
  • Ensure all changes follow established change-control processes.


Network Maintenance

  • Perform scheduled maintenance including firmware/software updates, hardware lifecycle tasks, and patching.
  • Support deployment of new network devices such as switches, routers, access points, and appliances.
  • Assist in maintaining network monitoring systems and alerting tools.
  • Keep network device inventories accurate and up to date.


Project Support

  • Support senior engineers in network upgrade and deployment projects.
  • Carry out implementation tasks including device configuration, hardware installation, cabling checks, and testing.
  • Assist with as-built documentation and configuration backups.
  • Support network cutovers and migration activities under guidance.


Voice & Unified Communications

  • Provide support for MS Teams Calling, Cisco CUCM, Unity Connection, and related voice systems.
  • Troubleshoot call-quality issues and perform moves/adds/changes.
  • Assist with voice system maintenance and updates.


Asset & Configuration Management

  • Record updates to network assets and maintain configuration accuracy.
  • Assist with CMDB updates, equipment labelling, and stock control.
  • Ensure equipment is documented and stored appropriately.


Service Desk Escalation

  • Act as a Level 2/3 escalation point for network-related incidents.
  • Resolve tickets within SLAs and communicate clearly with users and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to internal knowledgebase documentation.


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (routing, switching, VLANs, STP, basic OSPF/EIGRP).
  • Experience supporting Cisco switches, routers, and wireless technologies.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability and methodical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork capability.
  • Customer-focused with the ability to clearly explain technical issues.


Qualifications


Required:

  • Diploma or tertiary qualification in IT, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Desirable:

  • Cisco CCNA (or progressing toward certification).
  • Microsoft Azure or Office 365 fundamentals.


Experience

Required:


  • 2–4 years’ experience in a network support or network engineering role.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco networking equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting routing, switching, wireless, and VPN issues.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, PRTG, or Cisco Prime.


Desirable:

  • Experience in multi-site or manufacturing environments.
  • Exposure to firewall administration (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, etc.).
  • Basic experience supporting enterprise voice systems.
