What You Will Get To Do

The successful candidate will have a positive impact on our corporate culture by demonstrating the Town’s CARE core values (Collaborative, Accountable, Respectful, Engaged) through daily interactions with individuals at all levels of the organization, external contacts and elected officials. By effectively building positive rapport and relationships both internally and externally, the successful candidate will help us achieve our mission that together we deliver services that make a difference in our community.

Reporting to the Principal Planner, Zoning and Regulation, the Zoning Officer is responsible for:

  • Apply and review the relevant zoning by-laws in relation to all building permit applications in the Town of Whitby;
  • Apply and review the sign by-laws to all sign applications;
  • Coordinate the pre-permit zoning review process for Builders in a Plan of Subdivision, reviewing siting plans and model drawings;
  • Provide functional advice and technical knowledge on the application of the zoning by-law to other departments and external agencies;
  • Respond to public inquiries related to zoning by-law requirements at the counter, over the phone and via email;
  • Respond to requests for comments on Planning Applications from the Building division;
  • Conduct research and data analysis associated with departmental studies, projects and applications, including zoning by-law amendments and the Comprehensive Zoning By-law Review; and,
  • Other related duties as may assigned.

You bring to the team your strong reasoning, analytical, numerical, research and presentation skills. You solve problems by identifying, gathering and processing relevant information. You demonstrate adeptness in negotiation and approach situations with the goal to improve communication, diffuse tension and resolve problems.

To you, being at work is a mindset and not a location. You can switch seamlessly across modes of work and cultural norms of working in different environments. You know you best, including the tasks you do better when working virtually versus on-site. You believe that the cornerstone of successful working relationships is trust and understand how this positively impacts productivity and performance. You have a high degree of accountability, readily adapt to disruption, like to learn to skills, and explore new ways to connect and collaborate in the digital world.

What You Bring To Our Team

As the successful applicant, you must possess:

  • Four (4) year post-secondary degree in Urban and Regional Planning or a related field;
  • Two (2) to three (3) years’ experience in zoning or a related field;
  • Full membership or eligible for full membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and Ontario Professional Planners Institute (O.P.P.I);
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office, AMANDA, and Geocortex;
  • Working knowledge of Zoning By-laws, the Planning Act, Provincial Planning Policy, Growth Plan, the Municipal Act and relevant Provincial Planning Policies/legislation; and,
  • Strong verbal and written communication with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.

$39.38 - $49.21
