About the job

Champion Data has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Senior Java Developer to join our team on a 12-month fixed term contract!

This role is critical to maintaining and supporting core business software during a major transition to a next-generation platform. You’ll be stepping into a well-established system, replacing a retiring team member, and will be the go-to expert during your shifts. The role demands strong technical depth, autonomy, and a proactive mindset to ensure reliability and performance of our software during high-profile live sporting events. This role requires working an on-call roster, covering live sporting events (AFL and more).

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and support legacy Java-based systems (Java 25, Gradle, Git and build pipelines) with the rest of the Java team
• Participate in an on-call support roster during AFL and other live sporting events (evenings/weekends)
• Investigate and resolve performance issues, provide post-event analysis and implement improvements
• Collaborate with operational teams to ensure systems are running as expected
• Contribute to comparative analysis between legacy and new systems
• Support other Java-based applications as needed across the business

About You

• Senior-level experience in Java and related technologies (JSP, Jetty, Spring, REST APIs)
• Comfortable working independently and diving deep into complex codebases
• Strong troubleshooting and performance analysis skills
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and SQL (Oracle preferred)
• Agile team experience and excellent communication skills
