AWS Cloud Infrastructure Architect - Hybrid - Freelance

Role Overview

A customer of mine in Helsinki is seeking an experienced Freelance AWS Infrastructure Architect to design, implement, and oversee scalable, secure, and highly available cloud infrastructure on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The role involves translating business and technical requirements into robust cloud architectures, guiding engineering teams, and ensuring best practices across security, cost, and performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Design end-to-end AWS infrastructure architectures aligned with business and technical requirements
• Lead the migration of on-premise or legacy systems to AWS (re-host, re-platform, re-architect)
• Define and enforce cloud architecture standards, patterns, and best practices
• Build highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable systems using AWS services
• Architect networking solutions (VPCs, subnets, routing, VPNs, Direct Connect)
• Design security-first architectures (IAM, encryption, KMS, security groups, NACLs)
• Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK
• Optimise cost, performance, reliability, and scalability of AWS environments
• Collaborate with DevOps, Platform, and Software Engineering teams
• Provide technical leadership, documentation, and architectural diagrams
• Support incident resolution and continuous improvement initiatives

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as an AWS Architect, Cloud Architect, or Senior Infrastructure Engineer
• Deep hands-on experience with core AWS services, including:
• EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda
• VPC, Route 53, ELB/ALB/NLB
• S3, RDS, DynamoDB, Aurora
• Strong understanding of cloud networking and security principles
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK)
• Experience designing high-availability and disaster recovery solutions
• Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
• Strong stakeholder communication and documentation skills

Nice to Have

• AWS Certifications (Solutions Architect – Professional or Associate)
• Experience with multi-account AWS environments and AWS Organizations
• Knowledge of containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana)
• Familiarity with compliance frameworks (ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR)
