About The Company

Waymo is a pioneering autonomous driving technology company committed to transforming mobility and enhancing safety on the roads. Originating from the Google Self-Driving Car Project launched in 2009, Waymo has dedicated itself to developing the Waymo Driver—the most experienced autonomous driving system in the world. With a mission to be the most trusted driver globally, Waymo leverages cutting-edge technology to provide safe, reliable, and accessible autonomous transportation solutions.

The company’s innovative approach has led to the deployment of a fully autonomous ride-hail service, which has completed over ten million rider trips, driven more than 100 million miles on public roads across over 15 states, and conducted tens of billions of miles in simulation. Waymo’s commitment to safety, innovation, and scalability makes it a leader in the autonomous vehicle industry, continuously pushing the boundaries of what is possible in mobility technology.

About The Role

We are seeking a talented and experienced Machine Learning Engineer to join our Mapping team at Waymo. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, training, and deploying machine learning models that automate the creation of high-definition (HD) maps essential for autonomous driving. Your work will directly contribute to scaling Waymo’s mapping capabilities, ensuring the Waymo Driver can operate safely and efficiently across diverse environments. You will apply advanced ML techniques, including Vision-Language Models (VLMs) and Generative AI approaches, to pioneer innovative solutions in mapping automation.

As a key member of the team, you will own the entire model development lifecycle—from data collection and processing to model evaluation, validation, and deployment. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as perception and foundational AI teams, will be integral to integrating research into scalable, production-ready systems. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, shaping the future of mobility.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of practical experience in Machine Learning, with a focus on computer vision and/or deep learning.
  • Proficiency in at least one major deep learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end problem ownership and experience working across system components to deliver results.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deploy machine learning models to automate the creation of HD maps for autonomous driving applications.
  • Implement and advance state-of-the-art ML techniques, including Vision-Language Models and Generative AI methods, to improve mapping automation.
  • Manage the complete model lifecycle—from data mining and preprocessing to training, evaluation, validation, and production deployment.
  • Collaborate closely with other ML teams such as Waymo Perception and Waymo AI Foundations to adapt research innovations into scalable solutions.
  • Analyze large datasets to extract meaningful features and insights to enhance map accuracy and robustness.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of mapping workflows and infrastructure to support large-scale autonomous vehicle operations.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, commensurate with experience and location.
  • Participation in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program and equity incentive plan.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • Generous paid time off and flexible work arrangements.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development within a leading autonomous driving technology company.
  • Access to cutting-edge projects and collaboration with industry experts.
