About The Role

We are looking for a Senior Backend & DevOps Engineer with deep experience in AWS, Terraform, and TypeScript to take ownership of the backbone of our platform. You’ll be responsible for building scalable backend services, improving reliability, managing cloud infrastructure, and enabling the engineering team to move fast with confidence.

Our system integrates multiple microservices, real-time communication, data pipelines, and distributed workloads. You will design robust architecture, ensure operational excellence, and help develop internal tooling and automation that keeps our platform secure, reliable, and fast.

This is a senior, high-ownership role for someone who enjoys solving complex distributed system problems and who cares about building a high-quality engineering culture.

What You’ll Do

Backend Engineering (TypeScript & Node.js)

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs in TypeScript.
  • Own system architecture decisions around scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Implement resilient data flows, queues, and event-driven communication between services.
  • Optimise services for high throughput and low latency.

DevOps & Cloud Infrastructure (AWS + Terraform)

  • Build, maintain, and scale cloud infrastructure in AWS using Terraform.
  • Manage CI/CD workflows, automated testing, and infrastructure deployments.
  • Ensure strong observability (metrics, logging, tracing) across all services.
  • Drive best practices for availability, security, and cost optimisation.

Reliability & Operations

  • Own uptime, on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems.
  • Harden systems against failure through automation, redundancy, and proactive monitoring.
  • Improve platform performance and stability through profiling and diagnostics.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with product and frontend teams to deliver features end-to-end.
  • Partner with engineering leadership on architectural strategy and long-term direction.
  • Mentor other engineers and promote strong engineering practices.
  • Champion DevOps principles across the organisation.

What You Bring (Must-Haves)

  • Expert-level experience with AWS (Lambda, ECS/Fargate, S3, API Gateway, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, IAM, etc.)
  • Strong proficiency with Terraform (modular architectures, state management, reusable patterns).
  • Backend development in TypeScript/Node.js with production-grade experience.
  • Experience designing distributed systems, microservices, or event-driven architectures.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and build systems (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, etc.).
  • Experience with monitoring, alerting, and observability (Datadog, New Relic, OpenTelemetry, etc.).
  • Understanding of security practices (IAM, secrets management, network boundaries, least privilege).
  • Experience working in high-growth, fast-moving engineering teams.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with Azure (equivalent services, hybrid support, or migration experience).
  • Familiarity with Docker & container orchestration (ECS, EKS, or Kubernetes).
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (Postgres, MongoDB, Redis).
  • Strong knowledge of event-driven or streaming architectures (SNS/SQS, Kafka, Kinesis).
  • Experience with backend testing frameworks (Jest, Vitest, integration testing).
  • Experience with data protection and security.
  • Interest in or experience with AI tooling to speed up development, monitoring, or automation.
