Intecs Engineering Spa is an Italian company specialized in the design and development of applications, tools, software, hardware components and products for the Aerospace, Defence, Transport, Railway, Telecommunications and Smart Systems markets in collaboration with the main Industries, Organizations, Universities and European and Italian Research Laboratories.
To best support our customers in their transition to data-driven decision-making, Intecs Engineering is looking to expand its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with a Data Scientist to be inserted in its offices, either Pisa or Napoli.
This role is open to candidates that are willing to relocate in Pisa or Napoli (Italy).
The candidate will have the possibility to face and solve challenging problems in different areas including, for example: (i) Detection and Tracking of targets in war scenarios based on optical and infrared on-ground cameras, as well as data fusion of detection metadata with other data sources (e.g. radar) (ii) development of a solution for Predictive Maintenance and Anomaly Detection of underwater infrastructures based on a network of underwater sensors, (iii) Classification of underwater objects and long-term temporal monitoring and Change Detection of underwater infrastructure based on LiDAR data, (iv) Generative AI for improvement of internal System Engineering processes.
As a Data Scientist, we expect that you will be able to tackle business challenges with autonomy and scientific rigor and contribute to a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement within the Laboratory. You will be involved in all the phases of a Data Science project lifecycle including: collection of requirements, State of the Art’s analysis, explorative data analysis, design, development and training/validation/testing of the AI-based solution on powerful servers and supporting the Machine Learning engineers in the deployment to the operative scenario.
Main Responsibilities:
- Design, implement, validate and test cutting-edge AI-based solutions
- Write software that ensures high accuracy and speed performances, maintainability, scalability, reusability and reliability upon deployment
- Read scientific research papers, re-implement them and customize solutions according to company needs and customer requirements
- Extract semantic patterns and useful insights from data
- Train AI-based models, collect results on validation datasets and iterate for model optimization
- Prepare presentations and participate in technical meetings, with possibility of short travels in Italy and/or abroad
- Draft technical documentations
- Contribute to the drafting of technical proposals for national and international research initiatives
Must Have:
- Good knowledge of Python
- Knowledge of the main packages for Machine Learning: numpy, pandas, matplotlib, sklearn
- Knowledge of the Tensorflow framework or, in alternative, PyTorch
- Knowledge of Jupyter notebook and one IDE (preferred Visual Studio Code, in alternative PyCharm)
- Experience with Git versioning control system (preferred Gitlab)
- Good background in Statistics and Machine Learning (classification, regression and clustering)
- Hands-on experience in Convolutional Neural Networks for classification and detection tasks, as well as in tracking algorithms
- Hands-on experience with Docker container and conda environments
- Master Degree in a STEM field (preferred Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics or Mathematics) with a degree grade of at least 103/110
- Ability to present the results of the work to both technical and not technical audiences
- Good knowledge of the English language (at least B2), both written and oral
- Willingness to learn and ability to adapt to changing and challenging scenarios
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Availability to work in the Defence field
Preferred:
- At least 2 years work experience in an industrial setting as a Data Scientist
- Hands-on experience in Predictive Maintenance and Anomaly Detection algorithms
- Hands-on experience in building applications with Large Language Models (LLMs), including prompt engineering best practices and advanced prompting techniques.
- Practical experience developing and deploying Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems, including vector databases, embedding pipelines, and retrieval optimization.
- Experience working with Agent-based architectures (preferred LangChain framework), including tool integration and multi-step reasoning workflows.
- Hands-on experience in Experimental Tracking with MLflow
- Ability to propose original solutions to improve our products and services
