- Post Context/Post Summary. The Curriculum Planning Branch (CPB) is responsible to the Director APPED (DAPPE) for the development of curriculum for all courses, for the preparation of couse reading material, and the management of lectures and their presentations.
- Principal Duties. The Incumbent develops and maintains expertise in security issues relevant to NATO including a special focus on partnerships including MD/ICI areas of interest. In this expert function, s/he designs, prepares and executes Study Periods and/or Short Courses and related activities, which include the following tasks:
- Develop and prepare course materials, including syllabi, instructional guides and other course materials, including case studies , e-learning content, lecturers’ biographies and learning consolidation tools.
- Develop and deliver lectures and briefings in accordance with NDC Senior Course syllabus or other topics as required.
- Acting as a moderator during post-lecture discussion periods, facilitating engagement and knowledge exchange.
- Coordinate and host guest lectures, oversee post-lecture evaluations and contribute to study period reviews.
- Instruct and brief other faculty members and assist in the Assessment of Course Members.
- Accompany the Senior Course, the NRCC and other Courses attendees on Field Studies, when possible.
- Providing academic guidance and mentorship to the Senior Course, in particular in the preparation of study projects and individual papers.
- Manage the Partnership Real-Time Information, Management and Exchange System (e-PRIME) as both Editor and Coordinator Editor
- Special Requirements and Additional Duties. Flexibility Clause: The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties as directed. ‘Other duties’ should be similar, albeit in a different organizational element, to that which the individual normally works.
- Essential Qualifications. a. Professional/Experience.
- At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in relation to international security, defence and foreign affairs.
- Strong knowledge of Middle Eastern and North African societies, their socio-political dynamics, and Islamic religious traditions and diversity.
- Extensive analytical skills and an ability to present complex strategic security issues and policy options in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated expertise with developing, planning and implementing short courses or academic activities.
- Standard Automated Data Processing (ADP) - good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Application Suite and Internet use.
- PhD in International Relations / Political Science, or other relevant.
- English or French SLP 4444 – STANAG 6001.
- Other official NATO language SLP 3333 – STANAG 6001.
- Desirable Qualifications. a. Professional/Experience.
- Experience in Universities / Think Tanks or in Policy Planning.
- Previous professional experience related to Middle East, Mediterranean and Gulf Security.
NRCC or Senior Course at NATO Defense College.
C. Language Requirements.
- Arabic SLP 2222 – STANAG 6001.
- Farsi SLP 2222 – STANAG 6001.
- Russian SLP 2222 – STANAG 6001.
- Attributes/Competencies. Clarity and Accuracy: The incumbent must be capable to review and verify the accuracy of their own work.
Furthermore, s/he must be available to work long hours.
Have excellent networking, communication and negotiation skills.
Managerial Responsibilities.
The managerial responsibilities include directing individual research projects as well as preparing and conducting conferences and seminars.
Professional Contacts.
The incumbent must have very good relations to senior course members, external lecturers and to different international research institutes as well as to individual researchers and officials. S/he should permanently know the progress and the current status of research (papers/articles/lectures) in the various fields of NATO-related issues.
Contribution to the Objectives.
Ensure that the activities in the fields of conferencing and research are developed to support the engagement programme of the NATO Defense College; and coordinate the preparation of lectures and briefings according as a crucial part of NDC’s efforts to transform itself, particularly in terms of breadth and scope of the services it provides.
- Remarks Work Environment.
The successful applicant will be required to apply for and receive a NATO Secret Security Clearance prior to final confirmation of contract and commencement of employment.
Contract
The successful candidate will be offered a two-year definite duration contract which may be followed by a further three-year contract. Employment of research positions shall not be beyond five years duration.

Appointment will be subject to receipt of a security clearance (provided by the national Authorities of the selected candidate), approval of the candidate’s medical file by the NATO Medical Adviser, verification of your study(ies) and work experience, and the successful completion of the accreditation and notification process by the relevant authorities.
