Ready to work on machine learning that actually runs in production?

At OptoScale, we develop underwater imaging systems and learning-based software that observe live fish in their natural environment, continuously, all day, every day. Our technology replaces manual sampling with automated, data-driven insight, helping fish farmers make better decisions while improving fish welfare.

We are now taking the next step: moving from advanced decision support towards autonomous feeding. To do that, we’re expanding our AI & Optics team with someone who wants to work at the intersection of machine learning, perception, and autonomous systems - and see their work run in production.

About The Role

You’ll join the AI & Optics team, a multidisciplinary group building perception and autonomy for real-world aquaculture operations. Your main mission will be to accelerate the journey towards a autonomous feeding system - a complex challenge combining machine vision, 3D understanding, sensor fusion, and learning-based decision-making.

This is highly applied work. The models and systems you develop will run on real hardware at real sites, and your output will be used directly in day-to-day operations.

What You’ll Work On

You’ll contribute across the autonomy stack, with the freedom to take ideas from early exploration all the way to production deployment.

  • Training, improving, and deploying machine vision models in production
  • Developing perception, mapping, and policy components for autonomous feeding
  • Combining multi-object tracking, sensor fusion, and 3D environment representations to enable robust decision-making
  • Translating new research in AI, robotics, and autonomous systems into practical, reliable solutions

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving hard problems end-to-end — from raw sensor data to systems that behave reliably in production. You work independently, take ownership of your projects, and collaborate well with others. You’re curious, hands-on, and motivated by building something new, and you’re not afraid to turn early ideas into reliable solutions that run in production.

You don’t need to tick every box, but you should recognize yourself in most of these areas:

  • MSc or PhD in a relevant field
  • Experience with reinforcement learning, imitation learning, and transformer models
  • Experience with multi-object tracking and sensor fusion
  • Experience with statistical modelling
  • Comfortable in Python, and able to work effectively in a Bash-based workflow

It's a plus if you also ticks some of these boxes;

  • Experience with control theory or feedback systems
  • Experience with spatial understanding, such as SLAM, 3D point clouds, and environment mapping
  • Experience with autonomous robotics
