The Role

We’re looking for a proactive, product-focused Java Backend Engineer who enjoys ownership, variety, and delivering meaningful features.

You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams to design, build, and optimise backend systems that deliver value to both restaurants and diners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable backend solutions using Java
  • Develop and maintain serverless APIs
  • Build and consume REST and GraphQL APIs
  • Improve system performance, reliability, and scalability
  • Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues
  • Collaborate with product, frontend, and engineering teams
  • Implement new features end-to-end

What You’ll Bring

  • Strong proficiency in Java backend development
  • Experience building serverless APIs
  • Solid understanding of software development principles
  • Experience with REST and GraphQL APIs
  • Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (MySQL, Postgres, etc.)
  • Performance tuning and debugging experience
  • Comfortable working with Git
  • Experience writing automated tests and testable code
  • Familiarity with modern architectures and design patterns
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proactive, hands-on mindset

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AWS (S3, AppSync, API Gateway, Lambda, etc.)
  • Experience building or working with CI/CD pipelines
  • Interest in food, restaurants, and dining

Qualifications

  • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • 3–5 years’ post-degree commercial experience as a Java Developer
  • Full working rights in Australia
