Accountable to the Chief Nurse, the Group Director of Midwifery will be responsible for leading the midwifery profession and overseeing measures to safeguard the quality of care in maternity services.

The post will play a vital role in developing and implementing the vision for maternity services within the Royal Free London. They will provide clinical, professional and strategic leadership across the Trust and to the local maternity system and regional transformation programmes ensuring all standards are met. The Group Director of Midwifery is a pivotal member of the Chief Nurse’s senior leadership team, reporting to Board on the quality of maternity services as well as to the Barnet Health Unit Executive.

  • To provide outstanding clinical and professional leadership to hospital and community midwifery teams, acting as role model and being a champion of clinical excellence.
  • To be accountable for the safe and effective delivery of midwifery care across the group, ensuring professional standards are upheld.
  • To act as a senior member of the Barnet Health Unit Executive Committee and attend Trust Board in public.
  • To contribute to the development and delivery of the Barnet Health Unit’s plans for maternity services, ensuring that midwifery delivers its objectives as set out in the plan across quality, workforce and finance.
  • To hold responsibility on behalf of the Chief Nurse to ensure the RFL fulfils its statutory duties in relation to midwifery care as well as the quality of care and provide assurance to the Chief Nurse and Trust Board as required.
  • To ensure that the RFL has effective mechanisms in place to hear the voice of women, birthing people and their families and use this feedback to continuously improve our services and reduce inequalities in care.

This is an exciting time for the Royal Free London (RFL). We are now one year into our merger with the North Middlesex University Hospital and are in the process of bringing our services for women and neonates together into one Division across our enlarged group. This is a pivotal moment for an inspirational, visionary and compassionate senior midwifery leader to shape the future of maternity care and make a lasting impact.

As Group Director of Midwifery, you will be the professional voice for safe, effective and responsive maternity care in one of England’s largest acute Trusts. You will set the strategic direction, guide service transformation and ensure that women, birthing people and families remain central to every decision. You will work closely with the LMNS, the ICB and wider midwifery networks to turn insight into action and ambition into measurable progress.

Our maternity services provide family-centred care for women, birthing people and families across North Central London, supporting approximately 11,000 births a year. The service includes maternity and neonatal units across three of our acute sites; Barnet hospital, Royal Free hospital and North Middlesex hospital as well as community midwifery teams and home birth services.
