About SteerAI

SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council. SteerAI’s advanced AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, empowers the logistics and defense industries by turning industrial vehicles into autonomous powerhouses that can handle complex off-road missions, transform operations and protect organizations' most important assets: their workforce.

About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mechatronic Engineer to join our advanced autonomous systems team. The ideal candidate will play a key role in designing, integrating, and validating mechatronic subsystems across our autonomous vehicle platforms. This role requires strong hands-on engineering capability, deep understanding of electromechanical systems, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and integrate mechatronic systems including sensors, actuators, wiring harnesses, control units, and embedded electronics for autonomous ground platforms.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering teams to define system requirements and contribute to overall platform architecture.
  • Perform electromechanical integration, ensuring mechanical and electronic components interface reliably under real-world operating conditions.
  • Support drive-by-wire, perception, power distribution, and communication subsystems in hardware development and testing.
  • Develop, review, and troubleshoot wiring diagrams, PCB layouts, and electrical schematics.
  • Implement safety-critical mechanisms, redundancy concepts, and fail-safe behaviors in line with industry standards for autonomous vehicles.
  • Lead testing, validation, and calibration of mechatronic modules, including HIL testing and in-field validation.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including system integration guides, hardware ICDs, test procedures, and validation reports.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for all mechatronic and electrical-related tasks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in mechatronics, embedded systems, robotics, or autonomous vehicle development.
  • Strong hands-on experience with mechanical–electrical integration, cable routing, wiring harness design, actuator and sensor selection, and system-level debugging.
  • Proficiency in embedded programming (C and C++) with a solid understanding of microcontroller-based control systems.
  • Good understanding of real-time embedded systems, communication protocols (CAN, UART, SPI, I2C), and motor/actuator control.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicle platforms, mobile robots (AMRs), or off-road robotic systems.
  • Exposure to safety-critical system development and functional safety standards such as ISO 13849 or ISO 26262.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as Altium Designer for PCB design is preferred.
  • Familiarity with ROS1 or ROS2 is an added advantage.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work within cross-functional engineering teams.
