The Engineering Manager provides technical leadership to deliver high priority initiatives through translating business requirements into robust solutions, managing technical quality, and overseeing vendor and development execution.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and architectural guidance to ensure delivery of highquality, scalable solutions.
- Oversee and manage the execution of engineering work performed by an outsourced development team.
- Drive end-to-end project delivery, ensuring clear prioritisation, timely execution, and resolution of blockers.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, and Business stakeholders to align on priorities, requirements, and success metrics.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including design, document and code reviews, testing, documentation and operational excellence.
- Plan team capacity, manage resource allocation, and forecast future headcount needs.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks, ensuring compliance with security, regulatory, and governance requirements.
- Foster a healthy, collaborative, and high-performance engineering culture focused on continuous improvement and execution velocity.
Requirements of the Job
Job Functional Knowledge:
- Deep understanding of engineering principles and technology architecture, with practical experience across multiple technologies.
- Proven ability to manage outsourced and internal engineering teams, including planning, execution, and quality assurance.
- Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC), agile methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, testing strategies, and operational best practices.
- Knowledge of regional regulatory, security, and compliance standards relevant to the financial industry.
Business Expertise:
- Strong understanding of the financial services or wealth management domain and how technology supports strategic objectives.
- Ability to translate business priorities into technical solutions and actionable engineering plans.
- Awareness of cross-functional dependencies and the role of the engineering function within the wider organisation.
- Understanding of industry trends, competitors, and emerging technologies to inform technical strategy.
Problem Solving:
- Capable of analysing complex technical and operational challenges, identifying root causes, and implementing effective solutions.
- Makes informed decisions considering multiple, often conflicting factors, including risk, cost, delivery timelines, and business impact.
- Applies judgement to balance technical trade-offs while maintaining delivery quality and business objectives.
- Anticipates potential issues and implements proactive mitigations to minimise disruption.
Nature and Scope of Impact:
- Directly responsible for the delivery and quality of engineering outputs for the team or outsourced partners.
- Influences project and technical decisions that impact cross-functional teams and business priorities.
- Contributes to shaping the engineering strategy and practices that support organizational goals.
- Role impacts the efficiency, scalability, and reliability of business-critical systems and processes.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Regularly engages with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leadership, Product, Architecture, Business, Group Technology, and external vendors.
- Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Motivates, influences, and coaches engineering teams to achieve high performance and alignment with business objectives.
- Requires diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills to manage cross-team dependencies and stakeholder expectations.
Special Requirements:
Occasional travel or work outside regular hours may be required to support the delivery of business-critical priorities.
