The Security Systems Engineer will be a highly organised, dynamic, outcome orientated individual with excellent communication skills. They contribute specialist technical and cyber skills, acting as a subject matter expert (SME) to Government entities.
Candidates must be willing to undergo ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA).
The OSA requires a psychological assessment, which involves a questionnaire and an interview. Before submitting an application for this role, the candidate should consider their preparedness for questions that may include the following topics: personal relationships, living circumstances, personal values, financial situation, physical and mental health history including substance use, and any civil and/or military record.
Candidates must have an NV1 Security Clearance.
Key duties and responsibilities
ASD requires an EL 1 equivalent Security Systems Engineer to fill positions with Government Uplift’s Cyber Security Remediation Program (CURP). Systems Engineers are subject matter experts required to provide advice, design, implement, and remediate security controls across a suite of technologies for multiple external Australian Government entities, ranging across a number of systems.
The Security Systems Engineer will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
Work across multiple external Australian Government entities to deliver advice and implement security controls, enhancing the security posture of systems from Official to Top Secret.
Develop documentation for security engineering and administrative tasks (e.g. SOPs, Request for Change, design documentation, as-built-as-configured, etc.).
Facilitate and participate in workshops focused on security engineering design and remediation activities.
Develop and test prototype security configurations to inform the development of advice and guidance.
Implement security controls in accordance with ASD’s Information Security Manual (ISM), Essential Eight, or other industry cyber security standards.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government.

Essential criteria
1.Minimum 7 years experience as a Systems Engineer. Demonstrating experience, providing advice, designing, implementing, and remediating one or more of the following:
• Microsoft Active Directory
• Networking, Gateway or Software-Defined Networking
• Cross Domain Solutions and/or Diodes
• Sentinel or Splunk
• Enterprise Linux, Unix, or Similar environments, such as RHEL
• Cloud environments, such as SaaS, PaaS, or laaS on Azure, AWS, GPC, or similar
• Complex Windows Enterprise Environments
2. Ability to work independently and effectively in hybrid or remote teams.
3.Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce technical documentation, reports, presentations, and senior executive briefings.
4.Ability to provide direction to others regarding the purpose and importance of their work.
5.Ability to illustrate the relationship between operational tasks and organisational goals to others.
6.Sets work tasks for others that align with the strategic objectives and communicates expected outcomes.
Desirable criteria
1.Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or equivalent industry training and/or certification.
2.Experience in identifying, implementing and/or applying security controls.
