Student, Cyber Security Analyst – Hybrid
The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team at the Information Management and Technology (IMT) Branch.
As a Student, Cyber Security, you will work alongside a team of IT professionals to support and enhance AER’s cyber security engineering and delivery practices. This role involves assisting with the operation and improvement of AER’s cyber security infrastructure while gaining hands-on experience in a complex, fast-paced enterprise environment. You will collaborate with various AER business branches and contribute to IT security incident detection, prevention, and response efforts, helping to protect AER’s systems and business operations from evolving security threats.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Document and plan remediation efforts for identified vulnerabilities and exploits.
- Act as the initial point of contact for handling security incidents and security-related requests.
- Operate and maintain endpoint security and intrusion detection systems.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of security policies and procedures.
- Plan, implement, and upgrade security measures and controls.
- Monitor threat intelligence and vulnerability news sources for information that may impact existing infrastructure.
- Conduct technical investigations to identify root causes of security incidents and make real-time decisions during active incidents.
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Computer Science, Information Security, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Security Suite products is an asset; familiarity with MD-ATP and MS Sentinel is considered an advantage.
- Knowledge of computer network and host-based vulnerabilities (Firewalls, Intrusion Prevention Systems, Intrusion Detection Systems, network architecture).
- Strong working knowledge of Operating Systems principles and technologies.
- Demonstrated experience in administration of remote network endpoints where there is little to no assistance at the remote end.
- Strong understanding of Internet and networking protocols.
- Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new tools and frameworks.
- Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.
