Head of Engineering (Payroll or Freelance)

I’m supporting several clients in Belgium who are looking for a Head of Engineering with strong, hands-on experience in building software products end-to-end. This opportunity is ideal for senior engineering leaders — including former CTOs or technical leads — who still enjoy staying close to the technology while guiding teams and shaping technical direction.

This role is available on a full-time payroll basis or as a freelance/contract engagement.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and develop engineering teams across backend, frontend, and platform domains
• Drive technical strategy, architectural decisions, and long-term product evolution
• Stay hands-on where needed (architecture, design reviews, troubleshooting, coaching)
• Oversee software delivery from concept to deployment with high quality standards
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and leadership stakeholders
• Improve engineering processes, development practices, and delivery efficiency
• Mentor engineers, influence technical culture, and support hiring when required
• Ensure products are scalable, reliable, secure, and built for long-term growth

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering
• Proven track record of building and shipping real products end-to-end
• Strong experience in architectural design and technical decision-making
• Previous leadership experience (Head of Engineering, Team Lead, Tech Lead, former CTO, etc.)
• Solid understanding of modern software development, cloud environments, and CI/CD
• Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

Nice to Have

• Experience managing multiple engineering teams or functions
• Background in .NET, React, or cloud-native platforms
• Experience modernizing systems, introducing new technology, or scaling engineering capability
• Passion for mentoring, coaching, and building high-performing teams
