Senior Backend Engineer | Remote
We are supporting a company based in Estonia in the hiring process for a Senior Backend Engineer. The company provides a platform that connects food providers with customers, operating in a premium and technology-driven marketplace.
This role offers the opportunity to work on scalable, robust backend systems, contributing to architectural decisions and ensuring performance, security, and reliability at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using PHP (Yii2 and Laravel)
Build robust, secure, and high-performance backend solutions
Design and optimize data models and queries using MySQL / MariaDB and MongoDB
Implement caching, background jobs, and asynchronous processing using Redis
Ensure system reliability, performance, and scalability
Participate in architectural discussions and technical decision-making
Collaborate with frontend, mobile, and product teams to deliver features
Conduct code reviews and promote backend development best practices
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing
Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex production issues
Requirements
5+ years of backend development experience
Strong expertise in PHP, with hands-on experience in Yii2 and Laravel
Solid experience with relational databases such as MySQL and MariaDB
Hands-on experience with NoSQL databases, especially MongoDB
Practical experience using Redis for caching, queues, or messaging
Strong understanding of API design and backend architecture principles
Experience building and maintaining scalable backend systems
Good understanding of performance optimization and security best practices
Ability to take ownership of backend components and deliver independently
Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills
Additional Information
Good English skills are mandatory
Must have own laptop to work remotely
Strong knowledge of backend fundamentals
