The estate runs on AWS using Kubernetes EKS and containerised workloads. There are eight DevOps and cloud engineers in the team, most based offshore. This role replaces a retiring senior engineer and will act as the technical backbone alongside an existing people manager.
Role Purpose
Be the hands on technical lead responsible for keeping Core Apps reliable, secure, and cost effective. You will guide engineering practice, own key upgrades and migrations, and support delivery squads day to day. You will work closely with the team manager who handles people management and stakeholder communication, while you focus on deep technical leadership.
What You Will Do
• Own the build and maintenance of base images and AMIs that underpin Kubernetes workloads on EKS
• Lead upgrades and patching across EKS clusters, Linux hosts, and supporting software
• Run and improve deployment and housekeeping jobs. Current pipelines use Jenkins with an active migration to GitHub Actions
• Design and implement automation for repeatable environment builds, blue green and canary strategies, and rollback paths
• Establish monitoring and runbooks for Sterling and QuaS production, and lead incident response with a focus on rapid recovery and root cause elimination
• Drive InfoSec remediation by triaging vulnerabilities, planning fixes, and tracking closure
• Optimise AWS usage and cost through right sizing compute, storage, and networking while maintaining resilience
• Unblock the squad by pairing with engineers on sprint tickets, code reviews, and solution design
• Collaborate with release and environments teams to streamline non production and production changes
• Champion engineering standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing
Technology Environment
• AWS EKS, EC2, VPC, IAM, CloudWatch, ALB, Route 53, S3
• Kubernetes and Docker with AMI build tooling
• CI and CD using Jenkins and GitHub Actions
• Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation
• Observability using CloudWatch and similar tooling
• Sterling OMS and supporting services
• QuaS address lookup
• Tosca infrastructure for SAP test automation
Must Have
• Strong DevOps background with hands on technical leadership on AWS and Kubernetes EKS
• Deep experience building AMIs, container images, and deployment pipelines
• Solid Jenkins administration and pipeline authoring, plus practical experience migrating to GitHub Actions
• Proven track record upgrading clusters and operating systems at scale with zero or minimal downtime
• Clear understanding of cloud security controls, vulnerability management, and remediation workflows
• Production support experience for high criticality systems with calm and effective incident leadership
• Demonstrated AWS cost optimisation with evidence of delivered savings
• Excellent English communication skills and confidence acting as a technical point of contact for partner teams
Nice to Have
• Experience running Sterling OMS in cloud environments
• Exposure to address lookup services and high throughput REST services
• Infrastructure as Code using Terraform at scale
• Experience setting up infrastructure for Tosca or other enterprise test automation tools
• Knowledge of blue green and canary release patterns on Kubernetes
• Familiarity with change and release processes in large enterprise environments
Ways of Working
• Partner closely with the Core Apps manager who owns people management and stakeholder communication
• Focus on technical leadership, architecture, reviews, and hands on delivery
• Work within Agile ceremonies and contribute to planning and retrospectives
• Support UK core working hours for collaboration with engineering, release, and environments teams
