At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. Every day, our teams design and build technologies that push the boundaries of what can be seen, measured, and understood. From atomic-scale imaging to advanced data analytics, we create cutting-edge solutions that empower scientists to make groundbreaking discoveries worldwide.
Within Thermo Fisher Scientific, the Service Innovation (SI) group, which is a part of the Material Science Department (MSD), specializes in developing digital services that include performance optimization, health monitoring, diagnostics, and remote assistance for our advanced microscopy products.
The Assignment
An electron microscope operates using a beam of electrons instead of light, allowing it to achieve unprecedented levels of magnification and resolution. It can reveal the intricate details of a cell’s internal structure, the precise arrangement of atoms in a crystal, or the tiny imperfections in advanced materials.
The incredible precision and power of electron microscopes comes with a crucial requirement: the complexity of the electron microscope is staggering. It involves sophisticated electron optics, powerful electromagnetic lenses, ultra-high vacuum systems, and modern detectors. Even the slightest malfunctioning, disturbance or out of range operation generates a stream of seemingly random alerts, which currently must be assessed manually by service engineers.
To address this need, we have created a challenging student assignment focused on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to interpret the stream of alerts generated by an electron microscope. This project is crucial for identifying the root causes of alerts, as well as automating, scaling, and accelerating alert assessment and handling.
This assignment will be conducted within the MSD SI group in collaboration with the R&D department of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. It provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience applying artificial intelligence to industrial applications and offers insights into the dynamic environment of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., a leading multinational company in the scientific industry.
