About The Role

We are seeking a skilled Midweight UI Designer to join our Puzzles team, which is part of the newly formed Premium Propositions Product Group. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or an opportunity for internal secondment. In this role, you will be responsible for designing visually compelling, polished, and user-friendly interfaces across web and mobile platforms. Your work will directly influence the engagement, retention, and subscription growth of our digital audience by ensuring a cohesive and high-quality design language across all touchpoints.

You will work closely with Senior UX Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers to translate concepts, wireframes, and user flows into delightful, accessible experiences. From quick daily crosswords to complex puzzles like our Film Reveal feature, your designs will elevate the reader's experience and contribute to the overall success of our puzzles proposition. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a product that combines entertainment with intellectual challenge, fostering a loyal and engaged user base.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience designing digital interfaces for web and mobile platforms.
  • Strong visual design skills with an excellent eye for typography, layout, colour, and iconography.
  • Experience working with design systems and component libraries to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with UX Designers, Engineers, and Product Managers in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and responsive design principles to create inclusive user experiences.
  • Experience designing gamified or interactive experiences, with an interest in casual gaming or puzzles being advantageous.

We actively encourage applications from candidates who are Black, Asian or minority-ethnic (BAME), or from other groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

Responsibilities

  • Translate UX wireframes, user flows, and prototypes into polished visual interfaces that align with The Guardian’s brand guidelines and design system.
  • Create assets for both web and mobile platforms, including layouts, icons, illustrations, and interactive elements.
  • Collaborate with UX designers to establish visual hierarchy, clarity, and accessibility in all designs.
  • Work closely with Product Managers and Engineers to ensure accurate and efficient implementation of designs.
  • Participate in design discussions, providing UI-focused insights, feedback, and suggestions for improvement.
  • Support testing and iteration processes by developing visual prototypes for user feedback and validation.
  • Propose enhancements to components, styles, and patterns to improve design consistency and efficiency.
  • Stay informed about UI trends, visual design best practices, and emerging tools to continually elevate the quality of our puzzles platform.
