The Opportunity
Join a collaborative team of data scientists who use data to drive decisions across Aviva. You’ll work on high-impact projects from predicting customer lifetime value and improving customer journeys to applying machine learning to automate and predict claim outcomes. Your work will reach millions of customers.
As a Data Scientist, you will be part of our Data Innovation team, partnering with business stakeholders and influencing future products and solutions. You’ll contribute across the full software development lifecycle; from ideation and model development to deployment, production support, and monitoring. With mentorship and a supportive team, you’ll build practical models already used in production and help expand their impact.
What You’ll Do
- Transform sophisticated data sets into meaningful conclusions & recommendations.
- Develop innovative solutions for pattern recognition using machine learning and statistical approaches.
- Maintenance of a growing set of data mining tools, frameworks & approaches.
- Communicate model results and findings effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support innovation and continuous improvement in our data science practices.
- An educational background in computer science or engineering, math, statistics, physics or a related field. A minimum of an MSc is required.
- 3+ years of experience building models and working with large datasets (industry or academic setting).
- Proficiency in Python and best practices in software engineering (modularity, code reuse, documentation).
- Strong analytical skills and a keen interest in insurance pricing.
- Clear, concise communication and the ability to explain complex topics to diverse stakeholders.
- A collaborative mindset and eagerness to learn and contribute to a high-performing team.
- A learning mindset and structured approach to problem solving.
- A portfolio that shows how you derive insights from data (e.g., participation within the broader data science community, open-source personal projects, Kaggle competitions).
- Ability to flex across roles when needed to move projects forward (e.g., project management, development, modeling, chief communicator of solutions).
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to clearly explain complex algorithms to non-technical audiences. You understand that success isn’t just about building a great model; it’s about creating alignment and gaining buy-in from diverse stakeholders.
- Creativity, ownership, and the ability to lead projects independently.
- The salary band for this position ranges from $90,000 to $120,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
