Reporting to the Senior Director, Human Resources, the Human Resources Specialist works with Human Resources and Health and Safety initiatives for the organization.

The Human Resources Specialist supports the employee engagement initiatives; training and development; recruiting, onboarding and retention of staff; ensuring the organization provides competitive compensation and benefits; developing and maintaining human resources, and health and safety policies and procedures in alignment with best practices and legislative requirements; managing culture and change initiatives.


Know-How

Practical/ Technical Knowledge

  • A post-secondary degree in Human Resources, Business or Organizational Development.
  • CPHR Designation is an asset
  • 3-5 years of progressive experience in human resources.
  • Active affiliation with appropriate human resources networks and organizations
  • Thorough knowledge of human resources best practices, Alberta employment legislation and business operations
  • Experience in supporting compensation programs, recruitment, organizational development, employee relations and performance management
  • Experience working with organizational health and safety policies and practices

Planning, Organizing and Integrating

  • Experience in change management is an asset
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to help initiate and implement initiatives and coordinate multiple activities
  • Excellent attention to detail

Communicating and Influencing Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to coach, mentor, mediate and use tact and diplomacy to resolve sensitive matters

Responsibilities

  • Support the organization leaders as they implement Human Resources initiatives and performance measures based on policies and procedures
  • Ensure that Health and Safety policies and procedures within the organization are properly implemented in compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation
  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding of new employees to ensure a consistent positive first impression and experience
  • Support a strong organizational culture through employee engagement, recruiting and retention initiatives in alignment with the vision, mission, values and strategic direction of Alberta Municipalities
  • Assist with the rollout of the compensation program and annual salary adjustment conversations
  • Facilitate annual performance evaluation and succession planning reviews and initiatives to develop staff
  • Project manage the rollout and review of the annual employee engagement survey and assist with the presentation of results back to the Executive and Senior Leadership teams and employees
  • Help to coordinate corporate training initiatives and provide direction to individual employees on their training plans
  • Conduct exit interviews with all staff that are departing voluntarily and develop a quarterly summary report
  • Provide advice and support to the Senior Leadership Team on employee initiatives, communication, business planning and annual initiatives
