Science is developing ambient-light sensitive optogenetic proteins to restore vision without the need for assistive devices. We are looking for experimental neuroscientists passionate about optogenetics and vision to accelerate the translational work for our optogenetic vision restoration project. Candidates can look forward to becoming a key contributor in a talented, driven, and interdisciplinary team pushing the envelope of what is possible with optogenetics in the clinic. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience performing electrophysiology in the visual system, building and improving experimental systems, performing animal behavior experiments and working with neural data. This is a hands-on wet lab role, with the expectation that you will spend most of your time directly performing experiments and analyzing data.
Role Responsibilities
- Perform in vivo electrophysiology with both commercial and custom brain probes
- Help develop experimental approaches to test vision restoration therapies
- Record from retinas to assess efficacy of optogenetic proteins
- Design and help run animal behavior experiments to assess visual function
- Analyze experiments and present results, and collaborate with the team to push the project forward
- A track record of excellence and creativity in your field as demonstrated by publications, patents, success with commercialization or translation, or other notable achievements
- Expert level proficiency working with conventional in vivo electrophysiology probes (e.g. neuropixels)
- Expert level proficiency working with scientific computing packages to control online experimental control and analyze data
- Expert level understanding of the visual system
- Proficiency with animal behavior including building and programing experimental setups
- Thrives when working collaboratively and tackling difficult technical challenges, loves doing experiments, passionate about doing rigorous science.
- Excellent communication skills
- Commitment to helping foster a respectful and supportive work environment
- PhD in Neuroscience
- Proficiency with retinal histology
- Proficiency recording from retinas via MEAs
- Proficiency with AAV vector design
- Proficiency with molecular techniques like DNA isolation and dPCR
- Proficiency with ocular injections
Science is required under California law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on the indicated salary band. The base salary range for this full-time position is $100,000 - $160,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
