As the People & Organizational Development Director, you will join a vibrant and growing international team. Reporting to Meliore’s Chief Operating Officer, you will lead a global strategy to support our staff and organizational development, continuously improve core processes, policies, and systems, and hold overall responsibility for a high-performing global team.

The People & Organizational Development team aspires to maintain a healthy workplace by developing and refining policies and processes for recruitment and talent management, workforce planning, learning & development, payroll, administration, health & safety, diversity, and other initiatives.

This executive leadership role requires a seasoned professional with a deep interest in leading a global and dispersed team in a dynamic environment. This includes direct experience in human resource policy setting and management, people development, conflict resolution and stakeholder relations as well as policies, compensation & benefits, health & safety and people practices.

How you'll contribute

The People & Organizational Development Director will be responsible for the following key responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership & Senior Management

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team, contributing to the foundation's overall activities, planning, and strategy
  • Act as strategic partner for the Senior Management Team and Program Leadership teams across the foundation in all aspects relating to people and organizational development
  • Provide thought leadership by staying abreast of contemporary best practices in the field and supporting Leadership education to strengthen executive and senior management’s organizational leadership and management capabilities

People & Organizational Development Strategy

  • Lead and develop a global team to ensure effective service delivery across all people and organizational development functions (talent acquisition, learning & development, payroll, labour relations, etc.), enabling us to attract, recruit, retain, and develop brilliant team members
  • Continuously develop and refine the global people and organizational development strategy, policies, and processes (compensation and benefits, performance management, workplace safety, etc.) for all functional areas ensuring ongoing improvement and evolution aligned with organizational needs
  • Maintain and develop people and organizational metrics, and ensure data analysis and knowledge management to support learning and decision-making
  • Maintain and evolve the foundation’s performance management system to support talent development and organisational strategy;
  • With your team, prepare high-level, data-driven reports and insights to support Leadership in delivering Meliore’s strategic priorities
  • Oversee team budget and vendor relations to ensure tools and services are suitable and cost-effective (e.g., recruitment, payroll, insurance, information systems)

Governance & Compliance

  • Establish compliance standards and monitor adherence to internal policies and legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions
  • Maintain knowledge of employment legislation and trends, advising management on needed actions to remain compliant
  • Offer coaching, counselling, and guidance to management and staff on resolution of employment-related matters
  • Facilitate meetings of the our People & Culture committee of the Governing Board, ensuring smooth running of meetings, agenda preparation, and proper documentation
  • Support leadership management of collective employment relationships (e.g. national Works Councils); design, implement and refine strategy to ensure constructive collective employment relationships across the foundation and across a wider network of strategically aligned organisations
  • Lead change processes as needed to implement labor- and people-related laws and policies as may be required by jurisdictions where we operate and employee staff

Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI)

  • Support the Chief Operating Officer and Senior JEDI Lead (reporting to the COO) in designing and implementing prioritized initiatives to drive JEDI across the Meliore network
  • Ensure JEDI is integrated into critical organizational development and people management initiatives
  • Ensure training is provided to Line Managers on embedding JEDI across all people processes
  • Support the COO to report to leadership, staff Global Workers Council, and the People & Culture Committee of the Governing Board on Meliore’s practices and progress to incorporate and realize JEDI principles across strategy and programming, as well as talent acquisition, compensation, employment relations, learning, and career development
  • Lead human resources investigations in line with JEDI principles

Organizational Change & Culture

  • Actively engage in and lead organizational change processes, particularly in support of Meliore’s operational and strategic evolution, and adoption of P&C strategy and infrastructure
  • Uphold a positive employee experience throughout the organization
  • Support a culture of creative problem-solving by empowering team members, respecting space to make mistakes, and providing safe space for open feedback and mutually respectful communication

Our ideal candidate has

  • At least 15 years international HR management experience across multiple jurisdictions and various type of contracts (directors, employees, EOR, etc.), substantial experience in the Global South, deep knowledge of compensation & benefits, talent development, employment law, and interdepartmental collaboration
  • Experience in organizational change management, including involvement in setting up new entities or transferring entities
  • Experience with works councils and/or trade unions in multiple jurisdictions, including experience with associated negotiations
  • Experience in conducting fair and principled human resources investigations
  • Demonstrated experience regarding relevant aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion, with ability to integrate JEDI principles throughout organizational processes
  • Ability to grasp organizational culture and strategy, identify resulting needs, and design and implement appropriate policies, processes, and solutions
  • Excellent stakeholder management, with ability to communicate effectively and manage relationships at all levels with tact, empathy, and discretion
  • Proven experience in senior management team participation and executive cross-functional collaboration
  • Cultural awareness and a high degree of cultural fluency across Global South and North, people-centered approach, growth mindset, strong organizational and project execution skills, high ethical standards, active listening skills
  • Ability to drive work forward independently whilst collaborating effectively with colleagues
  • Active participation in external Chief People Officer communities of practice and commitment to staying current with industry trends and innovation
  • Familiarity with HR practice and norms in fast-moving, intercultural work environments across a global organisation in non-profit or for-profit business settings
  • A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change, with commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to addressing the climate emergency
  • Fluency in written and spoken English (our working language); additional languages are an asset
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers
  • The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack, and email (Google Workspace)
