Company Description

At Nautica Technologies, we’re pioneering intelligent robotic systems for autonomous ship-hull cleaning and inspection. Based in Zurich and backed by leading venture capital investors, we work at the intersection of robotics, autonomy, and sustainability to tackle critical challenges in the maritime industry. While still operating in partial stealth, our technology is already being piloted with major shipping companies. Join us as a Robotics Engineering Intern and help shape the future of proactive vessel maintenance and inspection.

Role Overview

As an intern on our core engineering team, you’ll gain hands-on experience across mechanical and software domains to help design, develop, and test our underwater robotic platforms. You’ll collaborate closely with experienced mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to build lightweight, watertight, and field-serviceable systems capable of operating in harsh marine environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and 3D CAD modeling of mechanical components and assemblies
  • Support selection of marine-suitable materials and coatings (composites, corrosion-resistant alloys)
  • Help develop and prototype watertight housings and pressure-tolerant modules
  • Write and test basic autonomy and control software
  • Contribute to ROS/ROS2 nodes for sensor integration and navigation
  • Participate in lab, pool, and on-vessel field tests, collecting data and iterating on designs

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a BSc or MSc program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Basic programming skills in C++ and/or Python
  • Exposure to robotics middleware (e.g. ROS/ROS2) or equivalent project experience
  • Strong problem-solving mindset, proactive attitude, and eagerness to learn in a fast-paced startup
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines

Nice-to-Have Skills & Experiences

  • Coursework or projects in underwater or mobile robotics, control systems, or perception
  • Experience with sensor fusion, SLAM, or vision-based navigation
  • Knowledge of sealing techniques, corrosion resistance, or magnetic attachments
  • Hands-on prototyping skills (3D printing, machining, composite layup)
  • Familiarity with embedded systems or real-time software

What We Offer

  • Mentorship & Learning: Direct guidance from seasoned robotics engineers and access to cutting-edge tools
  • Real-World Impact: Contribute to technology already being tested by industry-leading shipping partners
  • Hands-On Experience: Rapid prototyping cycles in the lab, pool, and on commercial vessels
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Adapt your schedule around your studies with a competitive internship stipend
  • Future Opportunities: High-potential path to a full-time role and equity participation upon graduation
