What You'll Be Doing
The primary purpose of the Unaccredited Trainee in Newborn Care Service at Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals is to provide effective clinical management of neonatal patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in neonatal practice, in a complex environment. The Unaccredited Trainee is a key member of the Newborn Care Team who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
The Newborn Care Service at Blacktown Hospital provides care to sick newborn infants born at Blacktown Hospital or that are transferred back from the tertiary hospitals.
We aim to improve the health outcomes for newborn babies by:
- Providing the complete range of specialized neonatal care for sick term and preterm babies (Level 4 newborn care services)
- Providing information, health promotion, resources, education and advocacy for the families of our patients.
- Conducting and participating in quality improvement to enhance the clinical care of our patient It is expected that the Unaccredited Trainee (UAT) has been exposed to neonatal medicine with proficiency in neonatal resuscitation as well as possesses critical decision-making skills. This includes making appropriate admissions to the Newborn Care Unit and making appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plans in consultation with the Newborn Care Consultant on-call. The UAT will be working as part of a team to provide holistic medical care for Newborn Care Unit inpatients, post-natal ward infants as well as attend deliveries, review and conduct baby checks in the post-natal ward and review neonates with common neonatal issues in the ambulatory care setting. The UAT will be expected to present on ward rounds, have competency in neonatal examination and documentation of management plans, order appropriate investigations, chart medications and undertake common neonatal procedures. These may include IV cannulations, blood gases, neonatal intubations, lumbar puncture and umbilical line placement. Training will be provided to strengthen these skills. The UAT will have the opportunity to perform non-invasive ventilation, surfactant administration and short-term mechanical ventilation with support from consultants. The UAT will be expected to support the arrangement of NETS transfer to a tertiary neonatal facility as required.
- Unaccredited Trainees will work in the Newborn Care Unit at Blacktown with the possibility of working in the Paediatric Ward at Blacktown or Mt Druitt Hospitals if the nee d arises.
- Required to be part of a 24hr roster
- The roster also includes "sick-on-call" shifts where they may be required to fill a shift within the specified 24-hour period at short notice.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the medical board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum of 3 years post graduate training, including recent relevant experience in neonatology to undertake the clinical duties of the role in a variety of clinical settings, as well as proficiency in basic and advanced neonatal resuscitation.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Advanced communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management, auditing and research.
- Commitment to delivering high quality, family centred care within a non-tertiary newborn care service, including a clear understanding of the unique clinical, developmental and emotional needs of newborns and their families in this setting.
