About Us:
At Syntion, we have been developing an intelligent wearable designed to empower people and enhance daily life through AI assistance. We combine compact hardware, advanced sensors, and real-time AI to deliver intuitive, accessible help to everyday people. Our device changes the way by which we connect with and use technology as humans, by introducing a voice-first technology that understands you conversationally and can carry out tangible tasks or requests using sensor data, advanced AI and IoT.
Location: Melbourne, Australia (open to hybrid/remote applications)
Team: 20 engineers (hardware, software, AI) + 3 commercial strategists
Role: Embedded Android Engineer
We’re looking for an experienced Embedded Android Engineer to join our Mobile App engineering team. This role will own the development of native Android software that runs on and interfaces directly with our devices (AOSP / on-device apps), as well as the supporting companion frontends that connect hardware, cloud services, and user experience.
You’ll work closely with embedded, firmware, and backend teams to deliver a reliable, low-latency, voice-first device experience that tightly integrates sensors, wakeword and voice control, power management, and connectivity.
Core Expertise
- Experience building native Android applications using Kotlin for production environments, including on-device apps running on AOSP.
- Experience with Android platform and lower-level components.
- Experience with audio and voice systems: wakeword integration, ASR/voice pipeline, microphone arrays, echo-cancellation, and low-latency audio I/O.
- Proven ability to design and implement device communication layers (BLE, Wi-Fi, TCP/HTTP APIs, MQTT/messaging or similar).
- Experience integrating mobile and on-device apps with cloud services, and hands-on use of Azure DevOps for CI/CD, pipelines, and release management.
- Strong understanding of mobile and embedded performance, power management, lifecycle management, and reliability—especially for apps that directly interact with sensors and hardware.
Key Experience
- 3+ years building production mobile or on-device Android applications, ideally for hardware-enabled, voice-first, or device-centric products.
- Demonstrated experience shipping and maintaining Android apps in Kotlin and working with the Android platform (AOSP or customized Android builds).
- Experience using React (web, React Native, or hybrid architectures) for companion interfaces is desirable.
- Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps (pipelines, builds, releases, issue tracking).
- Experience debugging real-world device issues (connectivity, state sync, latency, audio/wakeword edge cases, power & thermal behavior).
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain native Android software that runs on our devices and companion mobile apps that integrate device functionality.
- Implement and evolve on-device voice features: wakeword, voice capture pipeline, local/edge ASR routing, and seamless handoff to cloud services.
- Build and maintain reliable device-to-app and device-to-cloud communication layers (BLE, Wi-Fi, messaging).
- Integrate and manage sensor fusion, low-latency I/O, and real-time data flows from microphones, IMUs, cameras, and other sensors.
- Collaborate with embedded, firmware, and backend teams to design robust hardware/software interfaces and diagnostics.
- Contribute to CI/CD workflows using Azure DevOps to support rapid, reliable iteration and device fleet releases.
