Backend Software Engineer – £90,000 + Equity – London (Hybrid, 3 days in office)

The Opportunity 💻

Join a fast-growing fintech building an AI-led investment insights platform on top of a highly engaged community of senior investors and a growing base of paying corporate clients.

The current platform monetises well on the B2B side. As the first in-house Backend Engineer, you’ll take ownership to build, help shape the technical direction and work closely with product, design, AI/ML and frontend to build the next generation of the platform.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys early-stage environments, cares about real user impact, and wants genuine ownership rather than simply delivering tickets.

About the Role 💼

You’ll be the core backend owner in a small, senior product team:

• Lead backend development in PHP, from architecture through to implementation

• Design and build APIs and data models that power both investor and corporate experiences

• Work closely with the AI/ML engineer to turn proprietary insights into meaningful product features

• Improve and extend the existing platform while helping build a new AI-first product experience

• Collaborate in person with product, design and frontend engineers three days per week in London

The work blends greenfield development with thoughtful refactoring of existing systems, with an emphasis on speed, reliability, and maintainability.

• Integrations and data pipelines that leverage a unique expert community

• Internal tooling and services to support rapid product iteration and experimentation

• Performance, resilience, and quality as the platform scales

Skills and Experience 📈

• Strong PHP backend engineering experience

• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services

• Product mindset: you think from the user backwards and care about impact

• Comfortable in early-stage or startup environments (0→1, ambiguity, fast iteration)

• Clear communicator who enjoys whiteboarding and cross-functional collaboration

• Pragmatic use of modern AI tools in your day-to-day workflow

A background in finance or investing is a bonus but not required. The team cares far more about engineers who have shipped real product in small, high-impact environments.

📍 Location: London (Hybrid, 3 days per week in office)

💰 Compensation: £90,000 + equity via ESOP
