We are hiring a Head of Engineering – E-Commerce for a global retail and consumer brand, operating at significant international scale.
About the Position
A leading global retailer is entering a major digital and e-commerce transformation phase, with e-commerce positioned as a primary growth and efficiency lever for the business.
The Head of Engineering – E-Commerce will take end-to-end ownership of engineering transformation across global e-commerce and digital experience platforms. This role goes beyond operational leadership and is centered on modernizing architecture, scaling delivery, improving UX performance, and increasing business impact through technology.
You will lead a ~250-person global engineering organization, spanning multiple countries and delivery models (internal teams and external partners). A key mandate will be to evolve both the technology platform and the engineering operating model, improving speed, quality, cost efficiency, and alignment with commercial priorities.
You will work closely with C-level and senior leadership, product, digital, and data teams, acting as a bridge between business strategy and engineering execution.
Monthly presence in Germany (approximately one week per month) is expected to support close alignment with central teams and leadership.
About the Project
Over the next 12–24 months, the focus of this role will be to:
- Lead the modernization of a large-scale e-commerce platform, serving millions of customers globally
- Improve platform scalability, performance, and reliability to support international growth
- Drive measurable improvements in UX/UI efficiency, checkout performance, and conversion
- Strengthen engineering governance, standards, and delivery predictability across distributed teams
- Optimize the internal / external engineering mix for efficiency and long-term sustainability
- Leverage data and AI (search, personalization, recommendations, experimentation) to increase customer engagement and operational efficiency
This is a hands-off coding role, but requires strong technical authority to challenge architecture, guide teams, and make high-impact decisions.
What You Bring to the Position
- 10+ years in software engineering, including experience with large-scale, distributed platforms
- 5+ years in senior engineering leadership roles, with ownership of large organizations (150–300+ engineers)
- Proven experience leading engineering transformation in e-commerce, B2C, or complex digital platforms
- Strong background in modern platform architectures: headless, composable, API-first, microservices
- Demonstrated ability to connect engineering strategy to business outcomes (growth, conversion, cost efficiency, customer experience)
- Experience managing distributed teams and international delivery partners
- High technical credibility across frontend performance, platform architecture, and complex system integrations
- Hands-on exposure to: Headless CMS (e.g. Sanity) ; Commerce / experience platforms (e.g. Crowdpick) ; CDP-driven personalization and activation
- Experience driving UX/UI optimization, experimentation, and continuous improvement
- Exposure to AI-enabled use cases in production environments (search, recommendations, personalization, content automation)
- Strong people leadership skills, including building leadership layers, setting standards, and aligning teams around change
- Comfortable operating in global, multicultural, enterprise environments
- Fluent in English
Remote & Work Model
- Remote-first role within the European Union
- Candidates may be based anywhere in the EU
- Regular on-site presence in Germany required (approximately one week per month)
