A leading electronic trading firm is seeking an Staff Software Engineer to own the onboarding and early-stage development of software engineers joining a high-performance technology organization. This is a training-led role for a candidate with a strong software engineering background, responsible for designing and delivering a structured onboarding experience that enables new engineers to become productive quickly and operate safely in a production-critical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and continuously improve the end-to-end onboarding program for software engineers, from first week through production readiness.
- Design role-specific onboarding pathways and define clear ramp milestones.
- Develop and maintain hands-on training labs, exercises, and sandbox environments reflecting real production constraints (correctness, performance, reliability, change controls).
- Deliver onboarding sessions, technical workshops, and structured coaching, including office hours and guided ramp support.
- Partner with senior engineers and engineering leadership to ensure onboarding content reflects current standards, architecture, and operational expectations.
- Maintain high-quality internal onboarding documentation, playbooks, and practical guides that reduce reliance on tribal knowledge.
- Track onboarding effectiveness using measurable outcomes (e.g., time-to-first-change, early ramp blockers, recurring knowledge gaps) and implement improvements.
- Identify friction points in developer workflows surfaced during onboarding and drive fixes through documentation, automation, or tooling improvements.
Required Qualifications
- Strong prior experience as a software engineer in production environments.
- Proficiency in C++ (primary) and Python (amongst others)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to engineers with varying backgrounds.
- Strong engineering discipline: testing, reliability, performance awareness, and operational safety.
- A structured and proactive approach to building scalable programs, processes, and learning material.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams and engage senior technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building onboarding, enablement, or training programs for engineering organizations.
- Exposure to real-time systems, performance-sensitive platforms, or trading technology.
- Experience improving internal developer workflows, documentation standards, and technical learning materials.
- Familiarity with incident management and production change practices.
