A senior network administrator is an experienced IT professional focused on the day-to-day management, monitoring, and maintenance of an organization's network infrastructure. While closely related to a senior network engineer, the roles have different emphases:

Core Responsibilities: Senior network administrators manage the ongoing operation of existing networks—monitoring performance, managing user access and permissions, applying patches and updates, performing backups, and ensuring network uptime and reliability. They handle user support issues, manage network accounts and resources, and oversee help desk or junior administrators.

Technical Skills: They have strong expertise in network operating systems, active directory, network monitoring tools, firewall management, and user provisioning systems. They're proficient with Windows Server, Linux, DNS, DHCP, VPN access, and network monitoring platforms. They understand networking fundamentals but focus more on operational management than architectural design.

Technical Expertise:

• Networking protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, VLANs).
• Hardware from vendors like Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, Aruba, or Palo Alto.
• Tools for monitoring (e.g., OP Manager)
• Cloud platforms (e.g., AWS VPC, Azure Virtual Network, Fednet cloud).

• Key ResponsibilitiesNetwork Design and Architecture: Assess current network infrastructure, design enhancements for scalability, and recommend architectures that support high availability, redundancy, and performance.
• Implementation and Configuration: Install, configure, and deploy network hardware and software, including routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless access points.
• Maintenance and Monitoring: Perform routine maintenance, monitor network performance using tools like SNMP, NetFlow, or similar, and ensure uptime meets or exceeds 99.9%.
• Troubleshooting and Support: Diagnose and resolve network issues, including connectivity problems, latency, security breaches, and hardware failures. Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical incidents.
• Security and Compliance: Implement security best practices, conduct vulnerability assessments, ensure compliance with standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 20000 and integrate with existing cybersecurity frameworks.
• Optimization and Upgrades: Analyze network traffic patterns, recommend optimizations for bandwidth efficiency, and lead migration projects (e.g., to cloud-based networking or SD-WAN).
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed documentation of network configurations, create reports on performance metrics, and provide training/knowledge transfer to internal staff.
• Project Management: Assist in planning and executing network-related projects, including budget estimates and timelines.
