Software Developer (PHP / Database Migration Project)

Role Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Software Developer to join us on an initial major project involving the migration of data from a legacy platform into a new modern system.
The first assignment will focus heavily on database analysis, data mapping, and migration delivery. Once this phase is complete, the developer will have the opportunity to support additional software development projects, which may vary in scope and technical focus.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex legacy data challenges while also being open to working on a range of development work longer-term.
Although the position is primarily remote, candidates located near Manchester or Hertfordshire are preferred for occasional onsite client visits.
Initial Project Focus:
The successful candidate’s first priority will be:
- Migrating data from a legacy platform to a new system
- Analysing undocumented database structures
- Mapping and transforming data into the new platform schema
- Working closely with another developer to deliver the migration successfully
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver the initial legacy-to-new platform database migration project
- Reverse-engineer existing database structures where documentation is limited or unavailable
- Define and implement data mapping strategies
- Write scripts and tooling to support extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL)
- Work with both MySQL and MSSQL databases
- Support PHP development work as required
- Collaborate closely with another developer throughout delivery
- Ensure data integrity, validation, and consistency
- Document migration logic and database findings clearly
Essential Skills & Experience:
• Strong commercial experience as a Software Developer
• Solid knowledge of PHP
• Strong database experience with:
- Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL)
- MySQL
• Proven track record delivering database migration projects
• Demonstrable experience analysing and working with legacy or undocumented databases
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Desirable Experience:
- ETL pipeline development
- Data validation/testing during migration
- Experience with modernisation or platform rebuild projects
- Strong communication skills when working with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Working Style & Location
- Remote-first role with flexibility
- Collaboration with an existing developer on the initial project
- Occasional client visits (Manchester / Hertfordshire preferred)
Future Opportunities
- After completion of the initial migration project, the role may expand into other development and platform work depending on business needs and upcoming client projects.
