A UI testing role requires a combination of technical proficiency in automation tools, a strong eye for detail, and an understanding of user experience (UX) to ensure software is functional, accessible, and visually consistent across platforms.
Key capabilities needed for a UI testing role:
1. Technical & Automation Skills
Automation Frameworks: Proficiency in industry-standard tools for creating, maintaining, and executing automated test scripts, such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Katalon, or TestComplete.
2. Functional & Design Testing
Cross-Browser/Device Testing: Validating that applications function correctly across different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) and devices (iOS, Android, desktop).
Responsive Design Testing: Checking how the UI adapts to different screen sizes and resolutions.
Functional Verification: Testing interactive elements like buttons, forms, menus, and links to ensure they perform intended actions.
3. Specialized Testing Areas
Performance/Load Testing: Measuring UI load times and responsiveness under different network conditions.
Localisation Testing: Validating language, date/time formats, and currency adaptations.
4. Methodologies & Soft Skills
Analytical & Critical Thinking: The ability to analyse requirements, identify edge cases, and think "out of the box" to break the system.
User Empathy: Understanding user needs, frustrations, and goals to evaluate usability and intuitiveness.
Defect Management: Properly documenting, reproducing, and reporting bugs in tools like Jira.
