A senior scientist (all genders) position in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Software Engineering is available at TU Wien. The position is affiliated with the Institute of Materials Chemistry (Research Group for Theoretical Chemistry) and the Institute of Information Systems Engineering (Research Unit of Data Science). It comprises 40 hours per week (entry possible from 20 hours per week) and is initially limited to one year with the option of extension until the project end, as part of the dataTUdiscovery project. Expected start: March 2026.
The dataTUdiscovery project aims to establish a cross-faculty service center for AI in Science and Engineering at TU Wien, helping researchers from various faculties, such as chemistry, physics, materials science, and mathematics, to integrate Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning into their research workflows. The project aims to lower barriers to AI adoption and strengthen TU Wien’s position in data-driven research and digital transformation.

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 5,014.30/month gross, 14 times/year for 40 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.

Tasks
Research:
- Contribute to the strategic development of the dataTUdiscovery service center in a leading role, including interfaculty cooperation, innovation in AI methodologies, and integration with TU Wien’s digital research ecosystem
- Collaborate with domain researchers based on incoming dataTUdiscovery service center projects to transform scientific problems into robust computational workflows, including data preprocessing, model selection, and validation
- Develop reusable AI models, workflows, and software components, contributing to TU Wien’s open research infrastructure (e.g. TU Wien Cookbooks)
- Ensure reproducibility, versioning, documentation, and deployment of AI/ML tools using best-practice software engineering, e.g., Continuous Integration and Delivery, containerization, model lifecycle management
- Co-author publications of research results in peer-reviewed journals and potentially present outcomes at international venues to enhance TU Wien’s visibility in Research and AI
- Integration of applied AI topics into teaching, including supervision of interdisciplinary project work, student theses, and student involvement
- Involvement in basic and research-led teaching as well as direct supervision of Bachelor and Master student theses
Your profile:
- Completion of an appropriate doctorate in the field of computer science, data science, informatics, or a closely related field
- Proven research achievements in AI/ML or data-driven modeling, including peer-reviewed international publications
- Extensive previous experience in designing and implementing AI/ML models or computational workflows, ideally for scientific or technical applications
- Proficiency in scientific programming and modern AI/ML frameworks, e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, and experience with reproducibility, version control, and scalable computing environments
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, with an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration
- Excellent English language skills (C1 level or higher)
- Experience in supervising students or coordinating collaborative research projects
- Familiarity with research data management, reproducible research practices, or computational workflow design
- Interest in developing and maintaining open-source software, AI workflows, or educational materials
- Good German language skills (B2 level or higher)
