Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist – NLP to join SLB’s Data Science and AI community and lead the advancement of Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities across the organization.

In this role, you will be responsible for shaping SLB’s internal NLP strategy, driving cutting-edge research and development, and enabling project teams to design high-quality and ethical NLP applications. You will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into impactful NLP research initiatives and state-of-the-art solutions.

This position offers a unique opportunity to influence long-term NLP adoption, create advanced NLP artifacts, and represent SLB in both internal and external technical communities.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Continuously monitor and evaluate the latest developments in NLP research and technologies to keep SLB at the forefront of the field.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify research topics aligned with business objectives and translate them into actionable NLP research projects.
• Lead the research, design, and development of state-of-the-art NLP models, algorithms, and tools for real business use cases.
• Define and communicate a long-term internal NLP technology strategy and roadmap, including adoption, integration, and evolution.
• Support and guide project teams in designing NLP applications by promoting best practices, methodologies, and ethical standards.
• Perform technical reviews of NLP initiatives across the organization to ensure quality, consistency, and continuous improvement.
• Design and deliver NLP training programs for data scientists and technical teams.
• Drive innovation through patents and scientific publications and actively contribute to the NLP research community.
• Execute the internal NLP strategy by aligning research and delivery activities with business goals.
• Represent SLB in internal and external talks, seminars, and technical discussions related to NLP.
• Build and maintain collaborations with research institutions and industry experts to strengthen external partnerships and knowledge exchange.

Essential Requirements:

• PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, or a closely related field.
• Proven experience in NLP research with a strong track record of publications, patents, or significant NLP projects.
• Demonstrated experience leading NLP initiatives and guiding teams in delivering state-of-the-art and ethically responsible NLP solutions.
• Proven ability to design and deliver NLP training programs and enable knowledge transfer.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present research outcomes and represent the organization at internal and external events.
• Strong collaboration and teamwork skills in cross-functional and international environments.
• A strong passion for NLP, continuous learning, and innovation.
• Advanced expertise in NLP libraries and frameworks such as spaCy, Hugging Face Transformers, BERT, GPT, knowledge graphs and semantic search technologies.
• Deep understanding of NLP and deep learning theories, modelling techniques, and solution architecture.
• Working knowledge of at least one major cloud platform (Google Cloud Platform or Microsoft Azure).
• Strong hands-on programming experience with Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and Keras.
• Experience designing and optimizing distributed and parallel algorithms for large-scale NLP and deep learning workloads.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience working on enterprise-scale NLP platforms and production deployments.
• Prior involvement in cross-disciplinary AI or digital transformation programs.
• Strong external research network and active participation in scientific or industrial NLP communities.
